2004 f150 5.4L transmission replacment options
Hey guys. So it looks like I might need a new trans for my f150 fx4. Aside from the obvious options like stock and remanufactured ones what are there available for aftermarket? Also how about putting one off of the 5.4 in the newer trucks like the 2009s?
Thanks in advance, and sorry if this has been posted before

i myself am in process of deciding what to do with my tranny that just blew a front seal
1. just replace seal and hope nothing else is burned up inside as fluid all drained while driving $1100 plus taxes cdn
2. get ford to install a rebuilt one i buy privately with shift kit in it that upgrades factory weaknesses $3000 cdn plus taxes
3. get ford to put a brand new 4r75e in which may not have newer upgrades that a shift kits compensates for 4100 cdn plus taxes
decisions decisions......

I'm with this guy, just get it rebuilt. If your mechanically inclined enough just take it out yourself and save even more money. Took it out myself and took it to my transmission guy. All new geartrain, planetary's, friction plates, clutches, pump, seals, filter, and TQ $850 out the door. But add about $100 worth of mercon IV. Labor is usually the most expensive part.

yeah prices are a little higher here in canada i think
i got quotes from 3 different places in town which all charge about 1700 plus 10% taxes [ including exchange]. could be cheaper if less was wrong with my tranny
another private guy who rebuilt them for 43 yrs 23 exclusively for ford says he has one with all upgraded parts plus transgo shift kit which adds a 100 bucks. hes selling his for 1500 taxes included with exchange. but i do have to travel about 1100km to get it[$150 fuel] so 1650 all in
versus almost 2000 all in for local one
now this local builder is telling me shift kits are a shiitty idea for this tranny and it will never run the same and not needed in a normal non racing truck anyways.
can anyone concur with this?
i dont want a shift kit in a computer controlled tranny if its not going to run properly?
mine will never race , its just a hunting fishing quadding truck and daily driver around town in winter only.

Your best bet might be to pull the tranny yourself, buy a rebuild kit, and have some one bench build it. I bought my rebuild kit from Oregon performance transmission parts, I think it was 225. New torque converter was 125. Sonnax cure kit for valve body 80 bucks, and the tranny guy bench built it for 300 bucks and guaranteed it for a year. Also I think it calls for 12 or 14 qts of mercon v. So total I think I had about 7 or 8 hundred tied up in it. Saved a grand pulling and reinstalling myself.

he privately bench rebuilt one with a shift kit and all needed factory upgrades and will take my core exchange and charge 3-500 bucks less for the rebuilt than other local shops
plus i save the additional 900 labor to remove n install
