alternator bearing or ps pump. I changed both and no more whine in the morning when it's cold.

I sounds crazy but yes, it's the alternator bearing...
I'm not sure but I think you have to change the hole thing, even if it's still working good. Mine only does it when it's cold too !

my truck just started to make noise that sounds like the above mentioned. i have a 2006 FX-4 screw. it seems like it only happens at freeway speeds(50mph-70mph or more) it had crossed my mind that it could be the wind going through the body work. I had a honda that did the same thing. but, i think this might just be wishfull thinking. the noise from my truck is very faint and by the way i live in hawaii, so the cold has no effect on my whinning. it does sound mechanical, rather than the wind whistleing through some weather stripping. i am quite stumped..........i don't believe it is my cold air intake, because when i put the tranny in neutral and rev the motor the whinning is constant with the mph and does not fluctuate with the rpm's of the motor. anyone have any answers???

Did you buy my truck? That is exactly what my 04 did. It was consistent when the temps were below 38 degrees. It would whistle so bad at about 1100 to 1300 rpms, it would drive me bonkers. I had it in the shop on several occasions, practically pleading with Ford to figure it out. The last time I took it in, the service manager told me Ford was aware of the problem, but did not have a fix for it. They told me it was in the actual intake manifold. I believe the aluminum manifold is expanding/contracting, and when the air is thin it goes across some opening in a little different fashion, causing the whistle. I got so tired of it after 4 years, that I got rid of the truck last March. Good Luck, but I would not expect you will get anywhere with Ford. I can tell you, my 08 has the same engine and it does not whistle at all. Therefore, I think Ford changed something a little bit in the manifold, and knows what the problem was. I do wish you luck, as I know how irritating it was to me.

I have an 04 4.6 and at 12 to 15 deg mine also screams!! Has done that so several years, I have an K&N filter, the last time I opened hood and it sounded like it was front center of motor. Last night I stoped and bought a can of starting fluid to spray around in hopes to find any intake leaks, time I got home it had warmed up and was not doing it. I sprayed anyway and found nothing??

I have sprayed it twice and nothing?
I think if it was alt bearing the darn thing would go out
/?? mine comes back every winter! 12 to 17 temps? a bearing wouldn't last years if it was bad?
