Default 2004 F150 5.4 3V Stalls after warmed up

Truck starts up and idles fine when cold. It runs OK but has some hesitation at low RPMs while warming up. As soon as the temp gauge hits 185F, the truck will stall when coming to a stop. It can be restarted and runs a little rough between 1k and 2K RPMs. Above 2K it runs OK.

If you shift into neutral before you come to a stop it will usually maintain a rough idle around 500 RPMs. As soon as you shift into gear it will stall unless you rev it up around 1k RPM.

I cleaned and then replaced both the MAF sensor and throttle body and replaced the fuel and air filter with no improvement. I've reset the ECU after each replacement. I made a smoke injector and checked for vacuum leaks. The only place it showed a leak was at the solenoid for the 4X4 hubs. I replaced the solenoid but it made no improvement.

At this point the only thing I can think to try is swapping the ECU. As that is a bit more involved I will probably be taking a trip to the dealer. There are no codes being thrown.

Most likely its your vct solenoids. Unplug them and see if there is any change. They are on front of each valve cover. Report back as to what happens.

Default That sounds like great idea!

I have searched high and low on the forums for a week and didn't come up with this. I'll pull them tomorrow and take a look and let you know what I find.

Thanks,

Bob

I have been having the same issue with my 2006 F150 Harley Davidson. It has 82,000 miles will drive and sound nice, but once it warms up it starts run rough at idle ( 600-800rpm). My scanner reads two pending codes P0345 and P0349. I've swapped the cam sensors and still get the same codes. i changed the oil and put a can of sea foam... hope it clears the problem

Default I've got same thing happening

Just had timing chain kit and an cam phasers put in and was hoping it will correct this same stalling issue. NOPE! If you find a solution to this problem, please update this post with your findings. This thing is driving me crazy.

Thanks

If it's not Vacuum leak then try a new idle control valve or perhaps clean it first see if it makes some difference.

no vacuum leak everything looks good

... i have pending codes p0345 and p0349

when i unplugged the oil temp sensor on the side of the oil pan, the truck runs fine. I'm thinking i may have an oil pressure problem. ... anyone try this?

I pulled the connectors on the VCT solenoids and the truck runs poorly when cold. Low power, erratic acceleration, etc. When it gets hot, the idle becomes very rough and it stalls when in gear. So not better.

I ordered new VCT solenoids and was ready to change them until I found that I had the small (1 3/4") holes in the valve cover where the seals go for the VCT solenoid. While I could remove the seal, I can't get a torx screwdriver past the solenoid and the tab for the screw would not clear the hole even if I could get it loose.

This engine will need to have the valve covers removed to replace VCT solenoids and it looks like a Herculean task since the AC lines really hug it on the passenger side.

So I guess the question is what did I actually prove by pulling the VCT solenoid connectors? If it ran and idled well when hot we would say the solenoids were bad?

I'm bummed because it seems like a very likely culprit and I was ready to swap them when I thought it was an hour of work. To do it on this looks like a 8-10 hour PIA which will require breaking the AC hose and removing the AC dryer, ECU, battery and box and still will be tight as hell. How very disappointing it would be to do this and still have the problem.

I take it the VCT solenoids don't have a distinctive code that they will throw when bad?

Bob

Inno, did you by chance consider the vapor management solenoid? I read something about this on another forum. I'm having the exact same issue you have documented in this thread. Surely somebody else has solved this issue before. Thanks
