Default 2004 F150 4.6 Automatic no longer shifts into OD

It seems to be a pretty common problem, and I'm currently considering my options. I've been testing it every few days and I have still had no luck. I can feel it shift, one, two, three, NEUTRAL! Uh-oh.. Yeah as soon as I hit 40, it shifts into neutral without fail. I've read a lot of posts where some sort of servo retainer has broken or something? I've gotten quotes from a few places and I've heard anything from 1500, all the way up to 2800. Is it something I should bother fixing? Should I just cut my losses? I still have all four main gears. Is it going to get worse or cause more damage if there is something broken inside? I have no DTCs so I suspect it isn't the electrical issue I have read about in a few places.

Yes, get it fixed unless you want to buy a new transmission soon. At this point, it should still be repairable.

Well part of what I'm asking here is it worth it to drop 3 grand on a transmission at this point? That's a third of the cost of what I paid for the truck. It only has like 90k miles on it. Obviously I would get a warranty if I got a new trans. But 1/3 of the cost of the truck is a make or break deal. Especially if it's breaking the bank.

How long do you plan to keep the truck? If you plan on keeping it another 3-5 years it would be worth it. If less then I'd start looking for trucks asap

I ended up dropping it off at a transmission specialist. He said as long as it is the servo it should only be 4-500 bucks. So that is nice. He said that's best case scenario though so we will see!
