2004 F-150 Lariat - grinding sound?
Looking for some help here. My truck is making a sound like I am dragging a sheet of metal. Nothing is hanging and the noise is inconsistant. Comes and goes. Sound seems to be front end. The truck has 80,000km on it. At slow speeds there seems to be a different grinding. Again not all the time?
Please help. Thanks

Does the noise vary with engine speed or road speed?
Any changes when you apply the brakes?
2WD or 4WD?
First guesses based on the limited info would be a bearing failure in either the belt-driven accessories or front wheels, or brake pads that are worn way too far gone.

my 05 is doing the same thing, it is a known problem and there is a technical service bulletin on it. Usually the cause is a vacumn leak for the 4x4 that caused the hubs to try and engage also could be the iwe solenoid located on the passenger side on firewall under engine.

Weird
The truck is 4x4 and I have a feeling it is related to the hub trying to engage. Does not seem to be related to applying the brakes. It seems to happen more during acceleration and sometimes goes away while at cruising speed. When I slow down in town it gradually winds down and sometimes seems to disengage just before I stop.

Solution
Well I bit the bullet and took the truck to a decent mechanic. He says it was the left front 'actuator'... which is the part that engages the 4x4. Looks like a reasonable fix and the part was in stock (go figure). Thanks for the tips and particularly the vaccuum control for the hub. This is a poor design that Ford needs to correct.

Sounds like the same problem my 04 just started to have. When below 5mph the hub on the right side will engage fine, any speed above that and sounds like a vacuum leak coming from the passenger side.
Can any1 point me to the TSB on this, and maybe what I need to fix it. If its not to much trouble

There was a idiot drug store cowboy one of the; Got a wad of Redman Chew between ma cheek and gum's, I got ma Ford "peek up". ma Stetson hat, my cowboy boots got riding heels which makes we walk like John Wayne. Do you have any these fools in your part of the world? He drove into the parking lot of a feed store where I was picking up some dog food with a terrible grinding noise coming out from under his truck, yes it was a Ford F250 (poor thing). He got out and was wondering about the grinding noise. One of the group I was chatting with looked under the truck and this pinhead had somehow tangled up with a string of barbed wire on his rear drive shaft, there could have been a 100 feet of it spooled up in a ball about the size of a beach ball. When this was pointed out this paragon of The Cowboy Way wondered what he was going to do. One of the group handed him a big set of wire nippers and told him to have at it. It took him almost 3 hours to clear the wire out and when he was done he was bleeding so bad it looked like he had been in a knife fight.
