Default 2004 F-150 5.4 4x2 getting 10.5 mpg

I got a good question for 04-08 guys, my dad bought a an 04 F-150 Larait 4x2 brand new back in the day....she currently has 49052 miles on it. He has put a Volant CAI, Gibson side-swept rear exit exhaust, and a Superchips tuner (free-bie) on his truck.

My question is why does his 4x2 get like 10.5 miles to the gallon in town when my boss had an 05 4x4 and got close to 14.5 or 15 mpg in town?

Also my boss's old truck got like 16.5 or 17 mpg on the highway, and my dad's is lucky to get 13.5 mpg on the highway.

I'm just mind blown by all this. Let me know what yall think it wrong here.

Which Superchips tuner? Unless you've downloaded the updated CAI tune, they don't play well with CAIs.

You're boss's mpgs are higher than average.

Default Mileage

Mustang

Sounds fishy to me. I've got a 07 Scab 4x2, 8' box, 5.4 L with 4.10 gears and I average around 15 mpg around town. That's with a bone stock system (other than alloy rims) so it just doesn't seem right to me.

My bone stock (other than K&N drop in) 2005 Lariat 2wd I had averaged me 16ish MPG. If I kept it on the highway, I got 20 out of it a couple times... mostly it was around 18.8 on the highway. It had 67k miles on it when I sold it... I still regret it.

i would say that it can be the superchips tuner..... if I were you i'd get rid of the superchips & get a CUSTOM tune for that truck w/ those specific aftermarket parts that way you can get the full use of your parts for both performance and gas mileage.

You or your dad are not the only ones noticing low MPG with their Ford F150's. Do a search on this topic and you will see it comes up often, with suggestions on how to improve (somewhat). Problem is, you could spend lots of money to gain a mile or two per gallon, but the money spent to do so could go towards buying more gas. In other words, it would take quite a bit of time for the mods to pay off if MPG is only what you are after. Most mods will also improve performance, which becomes a double edge sword; you gain MPG but also performance, and some have trouble keeping their foot off of the gas pedal enjoying the newfound gains. Then their mileage decreases!

It's the nature of the beast with the 5.4. Ford addressed this with their new engine in the 2011's.

Perhaps someday there will be a new/used Raptor in my driveway....I will still keep my 05 STX 4.2 V6 though. It has not dissapointed me.

What MPG are you getting with your v6? How's the power? I'll be coming out of a Jeep Wrangler, so anything will seem like a rocket ship. Haha
