Sounds like timing to me but first, check to ensure all COPs are plugged in properly and the connectors are tight. Also, same for the fuel injectors. Either of these not plugged in will cause a misfire and give you a misfire under real load like trying to get up a hill or pass someone. Make sure that every other connector at the air filter housing is plugged in and click as well as the PCV hose with the "green" clips on them. If all connectors are good, I would definitely say he timed it wrong and/or did not build up oil pressure prior to starting it and the chain jumped a tooth maybe.
