Default Show some 5.4 love! No more bashing

Manifolds, COP's & Plugs, VCT Solenoids and Timing Components, FPDM, 4WD Solenoid, Pinion Seal Leaks, blah blah blah. Yes it has it's faults, but what motor doesn't?

I have a bad exhaust manifold, my trucks skipping from COP or Plug issues, and a couple other minor things, but it still starts and runs, and just about ripped the bumper off a chevy 1500 I pulled out of the ditch the other night.

Basically, I'm starting this post for people who want to celebrate the 5.4 3v. Let's discuss its merits and, with proper maintenance, how this motor can do over 200,000 miles. I just rolled 85,000 miles on my 2006 FX4 SCAB, and I plan on having this truck for the rest of my life, or until the frame rots out from under it! I believe that its a good motor and a torque machine. Share your thoughts.

Ill jump in as well. My 06 with 121,000 miles is running perfect. It is so quite and smooth. And now with the Edge it is more then quick.

I will admit when I first got it I loved the low end torque. But it felt like it fell flat above 4k RPM. After my Edge CTS the truck pulls and pulls. I have it set on level 3 as the unexpected bump in MPG has paid for the difference in price for the Premium.

Now you can agree or disagree with this but I have run 2 stroke engine oil in my gas now for 18,000 miles. I run it at about 500:1 this translates roughly to 1oz oil to 5 gallons of gas. So i fill up with 25-30 Gallons I put about 5-6 oz of oil in. There are a lot of people doing this specifically in the Trans-am's. I have not seen any bad side effects at all.

The one thing I noticed was that the motor runs much quieter, and smoother. I can easily hear my injectors clicking and it just sounds great. I even have what looks to be a weld on flowmaster or some aftermarket muffler in place of my stock muffler.

I switched to 2 stroke oil after I was using Marvels Mystery Oil, MMO and noticed that would quite down my engine. I used it off and on a few tanks. The 2 stroke oil must be the TCW3 oil. And you use much less then MMO.

Here are some websites that could be an interesting read. And remember the internet is pure truth... So enjoy.

Isn't the purpose of a forum such as this site to identify these potential "flaws", and discuss solutions and/or fixes for them?

Not too many people visit forums to discuss just the highlights and merits of an object; its to gain knowledge on the problems, and obtain and share fixes for them.

No one forces anyone to open or participate on a thread related to a problem that askes for help. Those that are bothered by this can simply move on to other threads.

I enjoy reading about items that can or do fail on my truck, and greatly appretiate the input others provide in coming to a quick, and cost effective solution for them.

This site is great in that aspect.

....and try hooking to a tow hook next time, so you don't "just about" rip another bumper off of a chevy. Because only chevys go in the ditch.

Well I tried. It seems that I had misguided intentions as to creating this post, since the only comments are derogatory in tone and suggest that I am totally incompetent as to why this forum exists. I am merely curious, and would like to discuss how people have had success with their 5.4 3v motors. I understand that this forum was created to troubleshoot problems, discuss modifications, improvements, etc. to our trucks. If your posting to insult my intelligence because I created a thread merely to celebrate the longevity of these trucks, please do not waste my time. I do not want to read about how this is thread just another misguided attempt to confirm ford superiority over other brands. I just wanted a consensus on how many people are gaining high mileage, so I can better determine how long I can run my truck, before purchasing a new one.

One thing I like about the 3 valves is the engineering. People may complain all day long, but I've noticed that even when a major flaw shows up, the engine normally keeps on going. Some have gone 50k miles or more with the phaser knock without a decrease in performance.

I like the idea of a positive thread. As stated, no one is forcing anyone to participate. If someone just wants to be negative, there are thousands of other threads which are more than willing to accommodate that type of mentality.

My 07 5.4 has 126K and is quiet as a mouse. I wont be negative like the others, but just a little observation here. Of all the things you mentioned in your first post, really only the timing components relate to a 5.4, manifolds, COP's & Plugs, FPDM, 4WD Solenoid, Pinion Seal Leaks can relate to any 04-08 F150. Sure the 5.4 has it's downfalls. Those can generally be taken care of with proper maintenance.

I enjoy having the 5.4 3V engine, yes, I have had to change the timing components, but I didn't really have to change them because the truck still ran like a champ. I have had a lot of other vehicles that had issues that would sit you on the side of the road, this one has not left me stranded yet and I really doubt that she will. Proper and timely maintenance is all she needs.

I agree as well, I have had several issues, but the truck has never left me stranded. I even went into the ditch this winter and snapped off a rear axle half shaft flush with the housing tube...truck started right up...I'm hoping to make it to the 200,000 mile mark with this truck. It was my first vehicle purchase, and it only seems fitting that I should keep it as long as I can...unless the salts eats it up first...
