Default 07 f150 5.4, how much work to do diff clutch packs?

so after some searching ive found that the clutch packs in the rear diff are failing . truck is shuttering while going forma stop/turning.

i have a lift and am pretty mechanically inclined, how much work is it to do the clutch packs? what special tools are needed to do the job?

found this DIY, and am wondering if anyone has a better DIY, or a better recommendation for teh clutch pack tool

truck is a 07 5.4 crew cab.

The truck tows a boat most of the summer and if there is a upgrade i can do, i would def be up for that/

Ive never really done any diff work, but if i put in a detroit locker, would that be a better a solution?

How about a better recommendation altogether- put an Eaton Truetrac in it.

do you have to tools to appropriately set the back lash and the proper rotational torque on the pinion? I've done them before in the past and while the job doesn't seem difficult, getting it perfect takes skill. not trying to scare you off on doing this. in theory it's not difficult and if you set the back lash right, the pinion meets the gears nice, and you have the right clearance with the shims, you should be fine. I've done it twice and apparently, i got it wrong both times because i have whining gears immediately. so from now on, I personally will leave that job to the pros.

Just finished getting a Detroit Truetrac in mine so I don't ever have to worry about the factory LS crapping out. I vote get the Truetrac and be done with the whole thing.

Have you tried adding friction modifier to the rearend? My 06 did the exact same thing as yours. 20k miles later and still works like a champ!

i have not, this just started happening recently, i tow a 27ft scarab and its wieght is withing tow specs for the truck, but its up a pretty severe incline at the marina, and im guessing this is where and why the rear end is hurtin. I could be wrong , but considering the truck only has 45k miles, one starts to wonder why this is happening. i only tow it from the launch to my out of water spot up the hill through out the summer, and the rear end issue just started to happen end of winter.

my biggest concern with adding the friction modifier is that mid summer my tow vehicle is going to be down due to friction modifier being a bandaid.

but i will def look into adding some.

If i try the modifier, how much do i need? do i need to drain some of the old diff fluid and then add the modifier or?

+1 for Trutrac. Basically install it and never worry about it again. It has no clutches to wear out.

Well shops usually charge about 200-300 labor per axle for any diff work. Plus parts.

Figure out what clutches cost versus just replacing the entire diff. Trutracs run about $500.

Depending on the shop they might even have someone elses used diff they can sell you for a good deal.

when i did my gear swap i traded my 373 gears and factory diffs to the shop for $150 off the entire install price. They only had 40k miles on them when i did it.
