'06 4wd, loud squeel when in reverse fixed.
My 2006, 5.4l 4x4 with 140,000 miles recently developed a loud squeel when backing up. If I backed up slowly no squeel. Backing up fast or up a hill....squeel. No squeel driving forward. Only reverse. After reading up here and learning a bit about the inner wheel assembly operation I figured I had a vacuum problem. I was also having an issue with the rarely used hi 4wd or low 4wd unlocking. I would have to put the gear selector in neutral and rev up the engine, let off the gas quickly to create vacuum. That would do it.
So, going the easy route first, I stopped by NAPA and bought the firewall mounted vacuum switch. I had the old style with no cover. Cost $26. Took it out to the truck, unhooked the electrical connection and two prong vacuum line....hooked them both to the new part and problem solved. I will remove the old part and properly install the new one on the firewall one day.
With this simple part replacement I can no longer make the hubs squeel at all and the hi and low unlock easily. Thanks to this site I was able to proceed in a most cost effective manner and solve this issue. I'll post some good pictures of the two parts if anyone is interested. It took the NAPA guy longer to look up the correct part than to install it. M1911
