05 5.4 rough idle almost dies

I don't think anyone really cleans their MAF and expects a 40rwhp gain... it's just something you do. Doesn't hurt after 120,000mi (my particular case) and it's not expensive.

I had a rattle on start up and a tick when at low idle after doing the chains, phasers, solenoids, lifters and followers. It was coming mainly from driverside. Never ran rough or anything but I switched out the Dorman solenoid today with a ford one and no tick no rattle so far.
Anyways when I pulled the Dorman solenoid out it looked good, screens were clean and looked new still. So looks aren't everything they could still be bad.
I took a $48 chance on switching it out if would work or not. Better than tearing it all apart again.

No, don't go. We're here to solve things. Thanks for bumping this thread back up to the top. I'd say for one, sorry to have to tell you this, but you definitely should consider pulling out all that Dorman crap. Dorman timing components are pretty well-known for failing in a short amount of time, and that puts your engine in some big danger.

I'm actually glad you're going to get that Ford diagnosis. The money spent on that could save you lots of money in parts.

small update.. took it to ford they told me i need 2 new vct solenids, even though they were new in august or something, they quoted me $500 for parts $500 for labour... apparently a 5 hour job... needless to say i bought two ford vcts $95 each and changed them at home in under half an hour... well no difference whatsoever.. any other ideas?

Yeah, go back and tell them the diagnosis was false because you replaced what they said was broken and see if they'll do it again. Politely though...
