04 XLT 4X4 light
I have an 04 F150 XLT 4x4, we bought it last year around january and i noticed a couple months after I bought it that the 4WD light doesnt always stay on. Most of the time when I flip the switch from 2 HI to 4 HI the light flashes once, blink and you'll miss it. However the truck is in 4 HI or 4 LOW, when I turn on my driveway and give it fuel I can feel it pulling. Intially since it was working I wasnt gonna worry about it but now I fear it could be the sign of a bigger problem or cause a bigger one. This is the first 4WD truck Ive owned so I don't really know a whole lot about them. Any info would be appreciated, I just hope its a small easy fix.

if it's in 4wd when you flip the switch, it must be a bulb or short.

Believe it or not it could be as simple as the IWE solenoid fluctuating resistance. I'm only guessing here but I've got an IWE solenoid sitting here that'll allow the 4x4 indicator to light up but it won't actually plug vacuum (leaving hubs unlocked). Other guys have had the IWE solenoid fail and the 4x4 light doesn't come on at all (similar to unplugging it - same results). I think the computer measures the load on it when it's engaged.
Again, only guessing but it could be as simple as that. It could even be the transfer case motor not contacting properly.
I know this doesn't help, but do you have an IWE solenoid you can test with? Start there?
Just to add... Does the 4x4 LO light come on? Or literally when going into 4x4, it only blips and that's the last you see of it until you cycle through again?

It just blips in both positions, but it locks in both positions. I can tell because i can feel it lugging when I turn. I dont have another IWE solenoid but if they are cheap I can get one pretty soon.

My 04 FX4 does the exact same thing. The light comes on for a split second but goes right back off and the 4x4 is locked in. I ran it all last winter with no problems and plan to do the same this winter if I need it.
