Default 04 f150 will crank over but wont start.

so I just finished installing a new A/C compressor on my 5.4l since the last one was frozen and wouldn't allow my truck to start up. now since I replaced it and put the truck back together it started and ran 3 different times the 3rd time I went out and put r134a into my ac system then the fourth time I went out to start the truck It will crank over but not start easily and when it does start I have to give it gas or it will die. if I sit there and crank it I will get a loud clunk from the starter. I am out of ideas and need some help.

Check to see if the compressor is frozen again. If not your starter maybe weak from the previous failure and need replacement. Any squealing on start-up? Could be a frozen idler too...but usually that would affect a starter.

Have you checked the FPDM? I doubt it's the compressor at this point.

I'm really surprised you were able to get the belt on with it being and inch too short.

ok so that wasn't THE problem.. it was a problem but not the problem.. here is something to wrap your minds around.. with the belt on my truck will crank but not fire up. but.. with the belt off and just the crank pulley turning the truck will start up and run just fine. here are the items replaced..
starter( from pick and pull)
battery
A/C compressor( from pick and pull)

I am completely stumped as of right now on this.

Try to disconnect the connections on the back of your alt, maybe it is dragging down the engine trying to recharge the battery or maybe it it's junk.
