04 f150 timing issue over and over
Not sure how a forum works but i am out of options. I have a 5.4 3 valve in my truck. In may it broke a timing chain tensioner, had the whole motor rebuilt, all timing componets are brand new, cams crank every internal part is fresh out of the box. Upon completion of the rebuild the brand new phasers went bad out the gate. So those were replaced again along with complete vct solenoids. Now the truck runs great or less you drive on the freeway for awhile. When you get off and come to a stop it starts misfiring like crazy, but goes away when i start to drive gain, and will drive fine. The engine light came back on pulling the code that the cam timing is over retarded. Me and the mechanics are at a loss so I turned here hoping to find light the end of this expensive tunnel. Thank you in advance.

What brand of phasers did you install? Dorman? They are known to be problematic and prone to premature failure. I'd put genuine Ford phasers in it.

You said yourself that the first ones failed almost immediately. There is an old saying about crazy being defined as doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result. I don't mean any insult whatsoever, just pointing out that if the first ones failed right off the bat, a second round of failure(s) wouldn't be very surprising. I also wonder if these motors are prone to coking/clogging their VCT supply passages?

Very good point. From what i have read and researched usually to clog the vct passage takes time of bad maintenance. The motor has less then 200 miles on it before the problem arose.

Get those Dorman phasers out, and put some Motorcraft in there. If you do a search on the forum about the phaser issue, you'll see that time and time again the Dorman's fail almost immediately. The Motorcraft are a little bit more expensive, but much more reliable, than the Dorman.
