Default 04 f150 start up noise

When I crank my truck it gives a rattle for a couple seconds then goes away. It's a 5.4 screw 4x4. Thought it might be something to do with exhaust but not sure. I can hear a noise that sounds like exhaust leak when drive by buildings but like I said the rattle only happens on cold start up. It makes a faint tick noise when idle. Any kind of insight would be appreciated as I have heard so much about the cam phasers but the truck seems to run fine other than start-up noise by the way it has 100k miles on it and spark slugs have not been replaced just yet. Thanks

this is very common for the triton 5.4, there are a few things i know of which is the crank shaft and the valves hitting the aluminum heads. my buddys 2004 5.4 lariat does it (135k miles)

i had a similar problem about 2 weeks ago. it made the same tick noise only when it was cold or wet and i wasnt sure what it was. it ended up being the serpentine belt and i had to replace it along with 3 of the pulleys. was about $360 worth of parts and labor.

Mine was doing the same thing also. Turns out it was a leak from the collector to the manifold. The studs needed to be replaced. 50.00 repair at local Muffler shop. 05 fx4 150,000 miles
