Yet (another) 5.0 Exhaust Question
Ok ok yes I know there are a million and one questions about which exhaust to pick, yes I have searched too, but can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for.
I own a '13 FX4 w/ the 5.0, CCLB. I measured the exhaust pipe with a caliper and it read 3" out and 2.5 where the resonator and muffler are welded together (roughly 2.7-2.8" around the entrance of pipe into muffler from what i remember).
Anyway, what I'm looking at is a muffler only setup. I plan on going 18" to get somewhere in the middle of too loud and quiet (is 18" good for that?) and I will be dumping after the axle. Resonater will also be left on.
So on magnaflow's website, under performance muffler (straight through), there is no 2.5/3 in/out option.
What gives? Do I need to change the out diameter from 3" to 2.5"? Or increase the in diameter from 2.5 to 3? What are the benefits/disadvantages of changing diameter? What do i need to change in order to put just a muffler on?
Sorry if this has been asked before, just couldn't find my specific question. I have never worked with exhausts aside from my motorcycle so I don't know much about them. Thanks!

On my truck its a 2013 5.0
I had the muffler deleted and had a Y put into duals
resonator is still on.
Its not loud at all very nice V8 sound and on the highway you can hardly hear it

I also deleted the muffler but went out the stock location. and I love the way it sounds. nice rumble in idle and mild on the highway and no drone. but when you get on it you will know about it.

Not trying to hijack but I'm looking to do exactly the same, just want a little more rumble over stock. Do either of you guys that deleted muffler by chance have a sound clip? Thanks

I don't. But if you look on YouTube there is a video of someone that did it. I can tell you I have a stock stereo base model and on 3 you can barely hear the exhaust in idle. When I get home from work I'll see if I can find the video

I am running a true dual flowmaster super 40 setup. I love the sound of it. I had a some drone in the cab. But that change when I cut off the tips going straight out the back and changed over to 45 degree tips. No drone what's so even.

I have this done on my 2014 FX4 5.0 as well as a 2015 XLT 5.0. Unless you want obnoxious sound and huge cabin drone, don't just delete the muffler without putting something in it's place. I've done it and instantly regretted it.
If you're looking for that balance between too loud and too quiet, all you need is the Magnaflow 12249. 18" single 3" in/out. A muffler shop will simply put a 2.5 to 3" coupler on your stock pipe to the Maggie. I've done this exact setup on two trucks now and have not been disappointed. Don't pay more than $60-$80 to have someone swap the mufflers. I had Midas give me a $200 quote just to weld in the new muffler! Went to a small mom/pop muffler shop and they had me in and out in under 30 minutes for $60.
IMHO the 18" is the perfect blend of tone and driveability. There's just the slightest amount of cabin drone at certain RPMs but it's minimal. Highway speed is just slightly louder than stock. You'll hear it but it's not obnoxious at all. Cold startup and WOT are the best! Definitely puts a smile on your face.
Hope this helps.

100% agree with alborn98 ^^^^^^^^
Ordered the same muffler, shop charged me $100 to put it in, done. Sounds great, not over bearing, just enough to remind you that there's a V8 under the hood and cost effective. I toiled for a long time with the different options. Very happy with this choice and it was the simplest.
