Tow Haul Mode Question/Issue
I did a quick search and did not find an answer to my question. Before anyone asks, yes, I have read the manual.
I have owned my 2010 FX4 for just over two years now and I am not sure if my tow haul mode is working correctly. It holds the gears like it should going up, but it will not downshift (it downshifts like it would without tow haul mode) no mater what I do. It does not matter if it is just the truck empty or there is 8000 (approx.) pounds behind it. I do know that you have to tap the brakes for it to work, but it does nothing to make it downshift in my truck. Maybe that is just the way my truck is? Would reflashing the trans make a difference?
I will add that I have driven a few Super Dutys (08 5.4, 12 6.2, 14 6.7) and those will downshift in tow haul mode even with no load and without touching the pedal so maybe I am setting my sights too high.

Tow Haul Mode Question/Issue
I have 09 and the only time I get engine braking is when I am going down a hill with the brakes applied. I beleave that you have to be going down a hill for engine braking. Let me do some research and I will get back to you.

Tow Haul Mode Question/Issue
Clarify some things,
"It hold gears going up" going up what? Up a hill or up in gears
"It won't downshift"
When won't it downshift? Like once you get to top gear it stays there forever? When are you expecting it to downshift?
If I assume what you are talking about, my truck will only downshift when rolling down hill when I have the cruise control on and set. It will downshift to maintain speed and use engine braking

MY 14 5.0 Down shifts with out load(sometimes I have to tap the brakes for it to kick in right), I do not know how a 09-10 acts and never road with my FIL with his Tow Haul on to be able to tell you. I can ask him, but he probably would not know what I am talking about.

When I say downshift, I mean engine brake. I want it to downshift when I am going to a stop.
The shifting is fine with the cruise set. It will up and down shift just fine when I am rolling down the road. I am looking for that engine braking when I am going to a stop that the manual says that I should have.

I don't believe the F150 tow/haul mode is programmed to downshift by simply tapping the brake pedal. My truck downshifts early but only when I stay on the brakes for a second. One tap of the brake pedal does not induce a downshift.
Also, you don't have to be going downhill for the truck to downshift. If you let off of the gas and the truck senses an increase in speed while you're not depressing the accelerator pedal, it will downshift to help engine brake to try and reduce speed without riding the brakes.

anyway, I think your T/H works exactly as it's supposed to. You do need to stay on the brakes for more than just a tap for it to downshift, especially when coming to a stop. It will rarely downshift for me in these conditions. I even find that it doesnt downshift enough for my taste when going down a steep hill, I often drop a gear or two manually.
It's not the same as a Jake brake (?) on a diesel.

Would that ever happen if you're not going downhill? Who knows, but that point is moot.
