Default 2010 air intake extra cavities

This may be a strange question, but have you ever looked at the stock intake on the 5.4? There's about 5 extra plastic cavities (or boxes) that hang off the main pipe. One of them even has 5.4 printed on it. It looks really strange, but I'm sure serves some kind of purpose. Anyone know what that purpose is?

They're special chambers that reduce sound in the cabin.

It's just extra baffling to keep the noise of air rushing through the intake down in the cabin.

alright. That sounds as good as anything I could have come up with.

The guy at the oil change place said it was just the designers wanting to fill up the extra space. lol

Hahaha nope, they're resonators. All I can remember about the official name is that it starts with an H. H_____ Chambers, I believe.

Question Ugly things on 5.4 intake

Has anyone tried removing the extra boxes on the intake? What happened if you did? Does a cold air intake syatem (without the extra boxes) still have loud intake noises?

There also seems to be an unfiltered intake in the intake pipe that is located right over the center of the motor down stream from the filter and just before the first box that has "5.4" on the side. Does this really intake unfiltered air?
