You need a legit 7 pin connection not just an adapter, ie trailer needs to have electric brakes not just surge.

Yes. It will accumulate mileage under the trailer you setup, so your normal mpg does not reflect towing it.

Yours does that, your lucky mine still logs it under normal mileage.

I'm speculating that if you connect a light bulb (not LED) or resistor across the brake circuit contacts on the 7 pin trailer connector, the truck will 'see' a trailer.
