What guage are factory wires?
I want to purchase some posi-taps to make a few connections and I'm not sure if I would be better off with the 16-18 gauge or 20-22 gauge taps. They are not cheap so don't want to buy both but I also don't want to use the small one if its too small and damage the wire. First tap will be under the hood for the reverse trigger wire for my aux backup lights. I'm thinking I need 16-18 guage as I think the factory wire is 18gauge but I could be wrong, might be 20. Any help would be appreciated.

There are a myriad of different size wires in the harness of the truck. Posi-lock, Posi-Tap, and Posi-Twist are pretty cheap ($10 or less for pk of 5) and can be had in a multi-size pkg for a few $. Buy a wire Gauge tool and take the guess work out.

For my reverse lights I tapped into the trailer connector wire. At the same time my relay is at the back side of the truck so it was the closest wire. and the least complicated

I used one of these to tap the wire with 16 gauge wire to the relay. I think it would cause the least harm on the wire. http://www.autozone.com/ignition/ele...al/310128_0_0/

I just installed reverse lights also, kept it very simple and just tapped into the 7pin harness no relay was used, I never hook up a trailer with reverse lights on them, and the 7pin is designed to operate without a relay. So no extra load on the wiring.
I didn't even use positaps, I spliced the wire (center pin in the 7pin harness) spread the wire apart and inserted my positive wire from my lights, then I twisted the wire around, electrical tape the wire back up, I grounded my setup at a near by bolt. Very simple install

I added a separate relay and just used the 7 pin harness to control the relay bc I also added a switch in case I ever need them when the truck is off.

I'm using the relay too because I want to be able to turn them off completely or switch them on to hook up a trailer or load the truck. Otherwise I would just tap at the trailer harness.
