I drove mine on just a little short jaunt, about 60 miles 50 of which @70 MPH w/outside temps @ 40*, and never saw the trans temp above 177*. I wonder at what temps the fluid gets routed thru the cooler, or even it is regulated at all?

In the 21st century with the internet you would think ford would post a technical FAQ that explains these things. To those of us from the old days the temperature of a trans that runs as high as the modern ones do would fry it.

It would be nice if Ford (is anyone from Ford watching this forum?) posted a FAQ about the very questions that are posed here? It seems silly that we end up with so many guesses as to why fill in the blank works on these new engines and transmissions. How about it Ford?

Dumb question but how do I know how many degrees are represented by the factory gauge? It has no numbers on it.

Per my service manual, the normal operating temperature range is 195 - 215 F

Put the information display in "Guage Mode" *Trans Temp is displayed in digital.

I talked to a tech in a transmission shop in Kalamazoo who stated that in our local climate, you can't overcool a transmission. Usually there is a cooling loop that goes through one of the tanks on the end of the radiator then the fluid goes to the finned cooler in front of the radiator. I that case, the transmission fluid would more or less follow the temperature of the engine coolant.

190* is normal for transmissions. Especially sitting in traffic. I'm not shocked by 205-210*. But I had a trans temp gauge in my dodge diesel that had a fully built transmission so I'm accustomed to how trans temps work. Below 140* and the converter wouldn't lock up to keep heat inside the transmission. I've seen spikes up to 220* in 110* heat sitting in traffic. Get up to speed and let the converter lock up, it would plummet to 170-180*. This truck seems fairly stable with temp.

Put the screen in gauge mode and watch them once while cruising. You will see them go from 190-199 in a cyclical fashion. It has taken me damn near 20 miles to reach normal operating conditions if I am just cruising with the converter locked.

Thanks,
But I just found out my XL doesn't have it. Kinda dumb; vehicle temps and pressures should not be considered "fluff" that should only come with luxury packages.

You have to understand that 99.9% of drivers don't care. If it starts and drives that's all that matters. Gauges that move make people panic and think things are wrong. That causes hassles for ford. You'd have people bringing their trucks in because their gauge doesn't move like bob's gauge so something must be wrong. I'm willing to bet that people with the luxury packages don't know they have it or don't bother changing it from the main screen. Face it, people these days prefer to remain blissfully ignorant on things.
