Can the 5.0 tow more than advertised?
I'm possibly looking at getting a 2013 Ford F150 4x4 Supercrew w/ 3.73 gears. The maximum towing capacity is either 9300lbs. w/ 5.5ft. bed or 9100lbs. w/ the 6.5ft. bed. Is it possible that the towing numbers Ford stated are underrated since most V8 trucks w/ the bigger gears would tow right around 10,000lbs. range?

Your GCWR will be listed on your door manufacture label. Your max LEGAL towing capacity is that number minus actual weight of truck with people and gear included.
Now if you are asking what the truck is capable of towing, that is another question and dependent upon how much personal liability you are willing to risk.

Sure it can, any vehicle can tow or haul more than the manufacturer states. Can you do it legally, safely and repeatedly without major harm to the vehicle are the real questions.
Other than the liability mentioned above it would depend on how much, how often and how far you want to move that load.
Me personally I don't like towing a load that weighs more than 130% of the tow vehicle until I step into a class 4 truck or better. It just feels unnaturally unsafe with so much weight. So I'd never top more than 8000 with any F150. That's not to say it isn't doable or unsafe when the truck is equipped for it, I just don't like it is all.

Those ratings also are for the manufacturer to limit your hauling capacity so they can have a chance of limiting warranty claims. If they didn't put a limit on the trucks, the only thing stopping a lot of people from hauling a semi trailer with a Ranger would be the crush factor.
Liabilty wise your limit is the yellow sticker on the door post bcause everybody is sue happy. Warranty wise your limit is also the yellow sticker. DOT wise your limit is what is deemed "Safe Load" and the rating on your plates. Common sense wise is what your Butt-O-Meter tells you via pucker factor.

Retired and loving it!
As the 5.0 has the same gears, tires and frame, same transmission, same hitch etc. as the EB, which is rated at 11,300 pounds capability........I would say that "perhaps" the 5.0 could tow a bit more than its rated for.
I think that one of the reasons that the 5.0 is rated for a bit less is that its torque curve comes in so high in the rpm range compared to the EB. Perhaps the 5.0 might labor a bit getting that much weight moving from a stop and would lug slightly......again, only compared to the more than capable EB.....

Buy the truck that fits your needs. If you need the ability to tow more than the F-150 is rated for perhaps you should look at a Super Duty.
Be safe,
