Used SCT. Make sure I have this straight..
Ok. I have a friend of a friend's cousins uncle or something with a used sct 3015 for sale. I've searched and read several threads on buying used tuners. So just to be sure what to look for, I have a couple questions. There should be nothing under the strategy code tab, it should say "unmarried", correct? And the 3015 should work on my 2012 5.0 so long as it is unmarried? If I get it, I should just be able to plug it up to the computer and update it and get any former stored tunes off of it? I'm sorry for my ignorance here but I have never messed with tuning any of my former trucks but you guys have convinced me this is something I can't live without now! I wouldn't really be interested in the canned tunes, I'm just looking for one to use to get some custom tunes installed. Thanks guys!

I have had several tuners, incl three sct tuners.
Yes verify it is unmarried. A way to check is to plug it into your truck before you buy it.
Also if you want the canned tunes, verify the tuner has those. Some don't.
Once you verify its unmarried and has canned tunes(if thats what you are after),
Then it should work. Update it before you actually load a tune. Then after you load a tune, make sure you save oem tune on a laptop as a back up. Also make sure you use fuel consistent with the tune you choose - 91 tune must have full tank of 91 octane....

Thanks! So do you know what it should say or what I'd be looking for if I plug it into my truck? Would it say unmarried somewhere if it were good to go?

I forget the exact words it it will be obvious if it's locked or married to another vehicle.

Oh and good luck getting the correct software for the PC. Took 3 tries before the correct version loaded. The X4 is not listed in the software, which is what kept screwing me up. Once the software is loaded, the rest is easy.
That reminds me, I have to reinstall it on my new windows 10 laptop. joy
In any case, you can plug it into USB to power it up and look at device info, and it should show a similar screen as the X4.

How's she goin' eh?
If that one is still "married" the previous owner has to return his vehicle to stock. At that point it becomes "unmarried" and you can use it.
I asked a dealer about this with my SCT as its from 2008. He told me I could use it as long as it was "unmarried". I'm so thankful I returned the ranger to stock before I traded it in.
