Beg to differ, I've found the downshift when tapping the brakes is not predictable enough to be safe on ice. Especially when going from 4th to 3rd you are likely to break loose on ice. Other than that, I like tow/haul when descending steep grades.

Ran great though.

Yes if U have little experience in packed snow/Icy driving you should be increasingly cautious. Using Tow/haul gives more secure shifting going up and down. I don't notice any severe change in handling characteristics just more secure feel of engine braking and shifting upward at higher speeds staying in the gear longer for better control. And your probably right if you are in 4th gear on ice you probably have bought the ditch or somewhere backwards.

Default Question for Papa Tiger

I'd be interested in your approach to the following: While carrying 800 or 900 lbs in the bed you top a 6% downgrade on ice at 45 mph with Tow/Haul on and in 5th or 6th gear. At what speeds do you "tap brakes" to downshift? It is a 4+ mile downgrade. Do you ride the brakes to keep it under 30 or so, or do you use the downshift feature as your main way of controlling speed?

Stick your head between your legs and kiss your @$$ goodbye!

Or use select shift to keep speeds slow on 2nd gear.

When I am feeling stressed after a days work, I hit the tow/haul button, lock out 6th gear, and mash the pedal hard to release some stress! That's on top of a 5* 87oct performance tune and Corsa DB exhaust on a 5.0. I feel much better when I get home.

45mph on glare ice down hill hope no one comming an stay on the crown of the road. Your best chance is ride it out. U cant slow down much at all without loosing control. UR going to haft to hope u can feel your way out of this pickle u got ur self into. If there is a curve abead down there pick ur best place to leave the road before your down there in a creek. A nice gentle shoulder or ditch means a tow an walk away from it. In these conditions the shoulder an ditch arent frozen and the car can slow down rapidly in it, 150' or so. Good ending for what could be a very bad day.
