I am still a bit lost on where I stated that "those trucks" weren't great trucks? I said the fancy models seem to be to impress... more so than work. They are all great trucks IMO. All will do the job, just some at half the price.

Sorry but this does not fly... If this was just a ploy for the service department, they would be pissed... Making something harder to get to makes their job harder. They are not superman, if it is harder for you to get to it is going to be harder for them to get to or they are going to have to buy a new tool to do the job.
I have a 2004 FX4 and it is offroaded everyday that it is driven, usually 5+ days a week... The only reason that it is an FX4 and not a XLT or XL is becuase it was the right price at the time. It runs great, handles b!itchen in the snow (thanks to my new tires) and is comfortable as hell to drive.
BTW, if the dealer does not have what you want, have them order it, carpet delete and all...

Should have clarified a bit better, if you guys like road jewelry truck...that's great. Keeps folks in jobs. Me, I want a basic work truck because I have children and I don't like having to "worry" about stuff getting on the carpet.
I have the part figured out that I can "order" it. But if they had it on the lot, I could test drive the truck I am going to buy...that's all. When I asked BOTH dealerships in my area, all they had was fancy models with more options than I need ... FX4, Lariat, and a few platinum trucks. NO XL F150 4x4....again as "JonWill" stated, I guess the world has moved on without me I am not missing much, my older truck runs great. Eventually they will get an actual work truck on the lot, not a cowboy cadillac, and I'll make the move then as soon as I can test drive it.

ok man, I got ya. I was getting at it "might" discourage prospective customers from actually trying to work on their truck themselves.

I follow you, I think that the ones you are seeing at the dealers is what they ordered... What you want is the "contractors edition" LOL... That is basically what my 2000 XLT was (or gardeners edition, as my brother called it)... The dealer can def. order it that way, most are probably fleet trucks that are ordered exactly as the new owner will want it.
