Trading 2012 FX4 for 2010 RAPTOR?!
Okay so I've got a good one for all the people on the forum.
I am from upstate New York and am currently working in Rapid City, South Dakota. I was driving by a honda dealership the other day and noticed they had a 2010 Raptor sitting out front. I stopped in and took it for a test drive and loved it. It's really clean, no apparent issues that I could find (it has 84,400 miles on it, which averages out to less than 12,000 miles a year). The only downside is that it has the 5.4 3V which I don't mind, its the best version of the 5.4 3V ever made. It does have 5 brand new 35x12.5 BFG TKO (one is a full size spare) and new brakes all the way around, with a hard tonneau cover. The truck is CLEAN.
I know the 5.4 3v had some problems in the past, that's why a bought a truck with the 5.0L. Are the 5.4's in the raptors really that bad? And are there any other issues I should check for? (I've already asked for maintenance records)
I just bought a 2012 FX4 back in march in new york and that's what i would be trading in. They're going to give me 22,000 for my 2012 FX4 (5.0L with 72,000 miles) so I would be getting a little more than what I owe. They want 30,950 for the raptor. Seems like a decent deal to me, but I won't have a warranty.
Just wanted some opinions since I would be buying a vehicle that's two years older, with more miles. I've always wanted a raptor, and call me crazy but I miss the low end torque of my old 5.4 3V. The 5.0 is nice, but it's a little gutless in the lower RPM range.
I know something is worth as much as you want to pay for it, and in this case I'm really leaning towards the raptor. Any suggestions or opinions would help me out, so thanks in advanced. I posted some pictures of my current truck and the raptor below for reference.

Thats a tough decision. Raptor would be really cool. But the fx4 is really nice too. I know what you mean about the low end of the 5.4 vs the 5.0 i liked that about my 09 vs my 11....but id say if you like it and you could keep the same payment your comfortable with go for it.

No complaints with my 5.4L That being said If I was going to buy a used Raptor I'd really be looking for the newer version with the 6.2L

The 5.4 is more in my price range, I agree with you though, the 6.2L would be nice, but the 5.4 is a little better on gas for the kind of driving I do.

I wanted a raptor, but purchased an '09 FX4 scab w/5.4. It was in my price range. The price of any year raptor in my area is severely high, and don't last long on any lot.

I've never driven a 5.4 but clearly my bias would be the 6.2 engine. Clean used Raptors seem relatively plentiful here in the SW. Checking CL ads for Phoenix area right now shows a few 2011-2012 Raptors with similar mileage and price range.

I'd really hold out, save more and get the 6.2 all day over the 5.4. Sure, it's a newer 5.4 but it still might have the cam phaser issues, injectors etc issues of the 5.4. My old 5.4 had more torque than my 5.0 but I'll take the 5.0 all day over the 5.4. 5.0 better mpg, faster and more power in the mid and top range.

If you have the money to spend, why not take the difference in price and upgrade your FX4? You can get a pretty big pile of upgrades, and your FX4 will be newer and have more power, etc...

My .02:
You could 'convert' your Fx4 for less than half the cost of the trade. You won't have the electronic goodies but for most folks that isn't an issue.
You could also sell your truck outright (which would net more than 22k) and then hunt for a better deal. Lots of guys on the Raptor forum are selling their gen 1s to get a gen 2.
I will say that all the 5.4 Raptor guys love their trucks and I have yet to see one with engine issues. Play hardball, see if they will come down on theirs and go up on yours.
