Default TPMS Function: Is it defeatable?

I want to buy a set of studded winter tires mounted on standard steel rims to use on my '09 XLT Screw 4x2 when the ice hits SW Ohio. Problem is my vehicle is equipped with Ford's TPMS.

Is there a way to temporarily disable the sensors/TPMS programming in the on-board information system so I don't have to look at the warning light all winter? I know I can purchase new sensors when I buy the tire/rim combo, but I'd like to save some cubic cash. I've always been pretty good at using MY OWN on-board TPMS--my eyes--for the last 45 years!

Thx--Bubba

I'm not sure but there might be a fuse that controls the receiver for the TPMS that you can pull out. The owners manual will show that. Or just call your dealers service manager. Hope that helps ????

What if you keep the non-winter tires in he bed to add weight? Wouldn't the computer see them then?

You will have to buy sensors for the new wheels. They are expensive !! You have to buy the sensors and the mounting straps. They will then have to be programmed into the cars computer.
Just try mounting the new tires on your original rims. Make sure the tire installer does not destoy the sensors removing the tires !!

I am not 100% sure how the Ford TPMS system works, but some systems need the sensor in the wheel to sense rotation to power up and send the signal to the computer, others do not.

Pulling a fuse wont work as it will just cause the computer to show a fault in the system and light the light.

I am guessing the dealership will not be able to disable it as it is a NHTSA(I think that is the government agency) mandated safety feature, kind of like airbags. I believe its 08+ vehicles that are mandated to have it.

I have had this issue on a few cars now and the two options I have come up with are a.)deal with it or b.)buy new sensors for the wheels, probably about 100 bucks a piece.

If putting them in the bed doesn't work you could install a hidden switch that will disconnect the light and run those wires to a resistor with the same impedance as that light has so the truck thinks is working as it should.

if the tpms is like the 07's,and i am pretty sure it is, you cannot defeat it, even with a custom tune you cannot get the tpms to shut off. i have taken apart my cluster and taped the back of the gauges. you can't take the bulb out, it's a led soldered into the gauge cluster....get 2 set of senors and have them relearned when you change rims, do what i did, or see that damn annoying orange light every day....
