Default Towing Capability

Hi guys, brand new to the forum, and I already have a question. Having never owned a F-150 before, I feel like I've got the run around from the ford website and my guy at the dealership. I'm looking into getting a 2012 FX4, however I need the max 11,300 towing. So I have the ecoboost selected and the sticker of the truck i'm looking at says it has 3.73 Electronic Locking Rear Axle. will this get me my 11,300lbs of towing? because according to the website, the only gear ratio that will do that for the FX4 is the 4.10 gears. HELP!!!!

The spec sheet I have from Ford says you will have the max tow rating of 11,200 with 3.73's. The 4x4 is 100 lbs less than the 2x4 rating.

You also need the max tow package which has a different rear bumper. It also comes with the bigger side view mirrors.

also carefully assess whether you need max payload option - you may be limited in towing based on tongue weight/payload if you're not careful.

EXCELLENT advice.....the tongue weight is going to be critical determining what you will be able to hang on the back bumper or bed.....Ford rates the truck to tow much more total weight than some trailer's tongue weights will allow you to.

Pretty much why I've all but eliminated any screw 6.5 from shopping list. Max payload would be required to actually tow a 5th wheel more than ~7000lbs safely with more than 2 people in the cab. 5.0L scab fx4 gives me more "useable" towing than the 3.5eb max tow screw fx4 I was considering and saves me 5000$ Most people just look at the tow rating and forget the payload rating.

I'm looking to tow a bumper pull 3 horse trailer with tack/changing room. Should be ~10,000 loaded. Will the EB/max tow/ 3.73 gears work for those needs? It'll be towing once a month and otherwise daily driven on secondary roads

It will pull it, but you'll probably be overloaded over the GVWR of the truck.

The truck with the 3.73 e-locker but without HD Payload pkg has a tow rating over 11,000 pounds, but it doesn't have enough payload capacity to tow a heavy horse trailer without exceeding the GVWR of the F-150

HD Payload pkg not available on Fx4. And you need HD Payload pkg to tow a 10,000 pound horse trailer.

Move down to an XLT 4x4 or up to a Lariat 4x4 and you can get what you need - both HD Payload and max tow pkgs. The only disadvantage to the HD Payload pkg is it comes only with 17" tires and 7-lug 17" wheels, and no options for different wheels/tires are available.

Go to ford.com and build&price your F-150. Choose F-150 Lariat SuperCrew 4x4 6.5' bed, EcoBoost engine, then choose 3.73 limited slip axle. Then Ford.com will add both HD Payload pkg and max tow pkg, with GVWR of 17,100 (tow rating of 11,000 to 11,300) and GVWR of 8,200.
If you choose 3.73 e-locker axle, Ford.com will add the max tow pkg but never mention the HD payload pkg, and you wind up with GVWR of only 7,700 pounds.

Same idea with XLT regular cab and 8' bed. Choose 3.5 Ecoboost engine, 4x4 and 3.73LS axle, and Ford.com will add both the HD payload pkg and the max tow pkg.

You're looking at a good setup there. You wont regret the EB once you latch onto that trailer.
