Towing with the 4.6 3v
So most of the responses on the towing threads seem to from owners of the 5.4. I have the 4.6 3v in a 2009 SCrew XLT 4x4, which I'm very happy with, and am taking delivery of a 20 foot toyhauler/camper on July 1st. The empty dry weight of the camper is 4,000 pounds and the GVWR for the camper is 7,000 pounds. I'll be using a weight distribution hitch and will use the OEM controller for the trailer brakes.
What can I expect from my "little" 4.6 3v engine if it's loaded up to 6,000 pounds or more?

This has been a few years back, but I got on an rving website and a gentleman was saying that his 4.6 was out towing the Chevy v8's (think it would have been the 5.7) back then.

My rig is the same setup and I've towed a 12ft enclosed dual axle trailer loaded with about 4000lbs of shotblasting equipment and ride on floor scrapers and it handled it without a problem. It actually pulled nicer than my friends 09 GMC2500 but the fuel mileage was about 12.5. If you are going to tow it everyday start looking for an F-2,3 If it's occasional use you will be fine.

I'm not a fan of trying to pull close to rated. I kinda think that number is bs.
Not to turn it into a Chev vs Ford debate (family truck is 2010 FX4 screw 5.4l 3.73, work is a 2010 GMC 1500 with 5.3l and 3.42) but... With a loaded box the ford doesn't shift near as much as the gmc has to on hills. Granted the gear ratio is enough to skew this. It kinda feels like the ford has more low end grunt compared to the gmc. Also tried pulling 10000lbs with a 2007 gmc 2500 with the 6l gas through the mountains, that trip really sucked.
To get back to the question though, sure the 4.6 can do it but it's always nice having something that can do it with a little more ease.
