I also started this mod a while ago....and I haven't looked at this thread at all until today, so I'm not copying you or anything. I was planning on building the kits for people, but if you're doing it I don't want to steal your business. Do you think you could do a writeup on the basic construction for it? Thanks dude. I'm intrigued by the top slide theory. I have iTunes match and iCloud but having it removable would make my $700 iPad purchase a little more easy to swallow.

Its all good brother, i took the idea from my main man Doug at Soundman.. and hes given me some advice on how to do this! honestly, i wouldnt build these kits for for much less than 600$.. i mean the fabrication, and the parts, and then the body work and PTM is extensive.. and i dont think people are willing to pay to play. so by all means, you go ahead and do it if you want to do it cheaper! when i get it 100% finished i'll probably do a how to.. i have pictures of every step so far

Well my girlfriend bought me the ipad, and she was a lil bummed out that i was planning on leaving it in there perminantly.. plus the risk of it getting stolen is very real, and i dont want to deal with a busted window. I refuse to do a side slider, even tho its much easier and Soundmancaraudio.com is releasing the kit to do it next month. Thats why im putting all this work for a cleaner, top slider look. I have never seen it done, and i want to be the first

I got the basic idea....I thought about either having a piece of ready-rod or ABS on the home button, running it up to the surface, covering it with a piece of vinyl, then bondo over it so all you'd have to do it push that area of the dash and it would press the home button. That, or use the assistive touch control thing on the home screen to save some effort in the fab process, although it takes a couple extra steps to get to the home button that way. I'm torn between those two options. I don't want the home button on the surface of the dash like soundman though. Waiting for some more glue and another dash piece. My air recip saw slipped and cut the outside edge of the first dash piece haha.

I too hate the side slider, too bulky.

Did you have to unscrew the factory deck and turn it to make it fit?

What I'm doing is wiring the power source to something that gets power when the key is turned. That way the screen will light up, and u can swipe the unlock button and then use the assited touch control button instead.. So far its working fine.. And I use a grinder and a metal cut off wheel to cut all my abs. U can make super straight cuts and its a lot steadier than a saws all style. I bought one at harbor freight for like 20 bones. And yes, u have to rotate the CD player so that the cd slot is facing down and the wire harness is pointed up towards the windshield.. Then i used the stock brackets to secure it

I was planning on tying it right into the USB since I have USB 2 as a spare....however after plugging my ipad into USB i found the dumb accessory connected message came up....and I can only access a few things. So I'm thinking getting an iStreamer and piping into the Line-In. I wouldn't be able to use the sync voice commands, but Siri would be available as well. I am looking for a small grinder and a sanding wheel, but Lowes and Home Depot only have the massive ones. The cutoff wheel idea is what I originally planned, rather than use the recip air saw and have to sand it down anyways. I plan on painting the piece glossy black, rather than trying to match the FX4 patterned veneer.

I may be getting old, but how does an iPad integrate with a sound system? Never seen this before. As in adding amps and such. Missed the second page, my bad. But if I was modding like this I would want subs and all the wax.........how can you get a pre out from and iPad

Well the ipad needs a head unit to be to deliver the sound, the ipad is simply a music source. U would still run your rcas and remote to a headunit as usual, and the ipad would go into the auxiliary input or usb input

What's great about the f150 is that you can unplug the button panel from the radio unit,
So you can customize anything in that area and still use steering wheel controls.

Basically it's like plugging in an iPod, but you're molding it into the dash to fit. It's just a music source piped into sync. Nothing more.
