I was just wondering how you turn it on and off and make it play through the speakers... i mean if you hook it up to the usb of the truck dont it have to be hooked up to the radio for sound and how do you exit out if programs with the home button hidden behind the plastic..

You can either use the bluetooth media stream, or just go into the usb as you figured. either option will give u sound and steering control functions. I still hve to cut out and extend the home button tho! Or i can just wire the power of the ipad into the truck so that every time i turn the key the screen will light up without the home button, and theres a way to add a touch screen home key.. as soon as i confirm all this i will just leave it as is!

I would be interested in this mod. When you get everything put together please show us a YouTube video of the GPS and other features working. Do you need to have a 3G iPad with a data plan to have working GPS?

No, you dont. u can buy a regular ipad and an external GPS reciever. Im running the Dual xgps150 and it works like a charm! Alot of Ipad 3g users buy it to make the navigation better. And its only 100$

I already have an iPad so that helps, but how does it charge? I also have. 2009 so no sync yet either or Bluetooth in mine. How would we get this to work for someone like me

You would need to have a headunit with ipod/ipad control or bluetooth. This way you could either plug the ipad into the usb, or play it via bluetooh. The only catch is, that you would have to have access to your headunit so u could push the source button and change it to the cd player, am/fm, sirius, stc, since u dont have voice commands through sync. This is how all the other ipad installs are done in other makes and models since theres no sync. I actually had a prototype were my stock headunit was mounted behind the ipad, so i could slide my ipad up and still have access to the headunit buttons.. this is what you will need. or you could mount your new headunit in that empty space under the dash kit! hopefully this makes sense!
