Default Tire Selection 285 or 295?

I have a set of 17" Method NV wheels, 0 offset 4.75" backspace. At first I was thinking of going safe and getting 285/70/17 A/T tires, but now I am thinking they may be a tad small and I would wish I went bigger. Currently the truck is stock suspension, and I should have no trouble with 285/70/17, but anything bigger and I would have to level. Thats not a problem because I want to install Bilstein 5200's in the spring anyway, but I would only like to go up to 1.75", second highest notch< I don't want the extreme CV angles of the 2.25-2.5" lift. So my question is, would I be better off with a 295/70/17 which is wider and about 33.3" tall or a 285/75/17 which is the same width but 33.8" tall? Or should I forget it and stay simple with 285/70/17? I am thinking if I level a bit with the 285/70's they will look too small.

Current short list is below:

285/70/17
- Mastercraft Courser AXT (P or E load rating)
- Toyo AT 2 (P or E)
- Cooper AT3 (P or E)
- BFG AT KO2 (E)

285/75/17
- Cooper AT3 (E)
- Nitto Terra Grappler G2 (E)

295/70/17
- Nitto Terra Grappler (D)
- Cooper AT3 (E)

Depends on if you want a little wider of a tire or a little taller. 295/70r17's have a little more tire selection available than say the 285/75r17 which it looks like you already have tire brands in mind for the given sizes. I went with 285/75r17's because like you, I thought the 285/70r17's would be too small and I already had the 5100's at the 1.5" setting, but I didn't want to go 35's because I knew that would require more trimming to make them work. I was thinking about the 295/70r17's as well, but still thought it might not be tall enough to satisfy what I was looking for and(as strange as this sounds) I was worried that the wider tire would have more affect on mpg's since there is more contact area but it really is irrelevant at this point.

Thanks 4.6Intruder. I forgot about your truck when I was doing my recent tire search. I remember now you responded to one of my old threads about the Methods and tires. I really was set on 285/70/17's but now I am convinced they will look too small if I level my truck a bit. I don't want to go any higher than the 1.5" Bilstein setting like you but your tires seem to just clear with a bit of tinkering and I would rather have a bit more wiggle room. I am going with Method NV's, but same specs as yours. Do you think I would have any issues clearing 295/70/17's since they are a tad wider with the 0 offset wheel? I really like the look of the Toyo AT2, but I also really like that I can get the Nitto Terra Grappler in a D load range which should give a bit softer ride than a E tire. Could you post a pick look straight sown the side of your truck from the from and from the back? I would like to see how far they stick out.

Thanks for the pic nrceptr. I think those are the ideal size on a 17" wheel with stock suspension, I would just like to go a bit higher in the front and am afraid they will look small.

295x70x17 Toyo MT's on 17x9 wheels with 0 degree offset or 5 inches of backspacing. These stick out 2 inches more then stock and were on my '04 Lariat that was leveled 2-1/2 inches. No rubbing and I still managed to average 16 mpg's on my daily 100 mile commute. Tires were 33.5x12.

JCP, truck looks great, what settings to you have your Bilsteins at? I think that looks perfect without making the wheel wells look too full, my only concern is I would be running on 0 offset wheels so I'm not sure what the rubbing situation would be. Do you have any more pics?

Sorry it took so long. I took a down the side pic. Hopefully it gives you a good idea on how far they stick out.

Damn you PawPaw lol
every time I see this pic with the Toyo's it makes me rethink getting them instead of the KO2's
