Tire Advice '12 FX4
I have the 20 inch option and the stock Pirelli tires are failing pretty bad (side note, expected more than 35k from them), but was hydroplaning all over the highway with this Texas rain we've been getting and they need to go.
Looking for advice on which tires to choose.
- I don't off road and we rarely have snow to deal with. Just water and ice.
- Don't want a ton of road noise
- Would like to not lose too much MPG
- I actually didn't mind the stock look of the Pirelli tires
Seems like Discount Tire still wins on pricing across the stores I've looked at and found the following four that seem decent. Does anyone have strong feelings for or against any of them?
Cooper Discoverer ATP

I had a hankook set on my last truck. Ran them for 50k miles and he ole Ty if tread left when I sold truck. They had great traction for first 40k miles and then deteriorated a tad in the wet...

for fastening fabric
I bet those nittos would suck in rain. falkens look like they'd do well in roadway water, but aren't aggressive looking at all.
not considering price, id run the coopers or hankooks. falken if price is an issue, and I'd outright avoid that nitto.

If you want to avoid hydroplaning, you need a tire with lots of voids and without huge tread blocks. The more siping the better. You can tell a lot by just looking at the surface of the tire.
Something like this:

Good luck!

From that list: Cooper ATP.
I have them now and they are great in the snow and rain. Seem to be wearing well after 10k miles. Had the Hankooks and they sucked in the snow and were 4/32 @ 28k miles.

First you need to decide what category of tire you want. The ATP and Dynapro are more of an AT tire, the other two look more like a sport street tire.
Also give consideration to the load rating. The factory tire is a P metric which will have a softer sidewall than say an E-rated tire. However an E-rated tire will handle towing better.
I strongly considered the Cooper ATP when I was shopping for tires. In the end, I went with the Nitto TerraGrappler G2. I've been very happy with it so far. Seems to be wearing fairly well (I rotate every 5K miles). No handling issues, dry or wet. They are just a tad louder than I anticipated and at very low parking lot speeds while turning I sometimes feel the lugs of the tires. But I'm really being nit-picky. Overall I'm still very happy with the tires. I drive 45+ mins both ways to work every day and I don't regret my choice. Of note, my tires are an E-rated tire, which I chose because I tow occassionally and I think they'll wear better given the weight of my truck. I switched to Bilstein shocks/struts when I did the tires and I'd say my truck rides equal to or better than stock.
If you don't want/need a more aggressive AT tire, then the Michelin MS2 mentioned above is an excellent tire.
