Glad I looked up the protected content issue. Right after I told SYNC to "play all" everything has worked normally since. And I only had to do it one time. Nice to be able to see the file names compared to my old vehicle!

Hi, irebel -
Where do you download music from? Is your thumb drive formatted to FAT 32?
Hey, HardcoreOffroading -
Does this only happen on Bluetooth audio? I recommend soft resetting your iPhone by holding down the sleep/wake and home buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, then try using this feature again.
Let me know what happens.

I just got mine working by following the advise in this thread. I was getting the can't play copyrighted material message. I just gave the voice command "play all" and it works!!

I got a 128G flash drive for Christmas and loaded it up with music from my iTunes library. I took a few minutes and scrubbed out the few remaining DRM'd songs left in my library (some I re-purchased, the rest I just deleted) before I copied them over to the flash drive. My songs are a mixture of mp3 and m4a file types.
When I plugged the new drive into the truck, I got the usual "this device cannot play copyrighted music" message from Ford and then it started playing just fine (took a while to index).
2013 FX4 Sync w/MFT and NAV.

usb wont play on my ford
yes of course how do you think the mp3 got on the flash drive.
I thing that gets me is that you would think that after spending so much money on a vehicle that they would put in better players. Why is it I can go down to best buy and get a radio with usb that works properly and same as my TV and media player and game consoles etc... they all work great and spend under 200.00 but buy a vehicle and spend a awful amount of money and they put in cheaper outdated crap.
lol Welcome to the 21 century. I asked them at the ford dealer but no one could help me. When it goes to the tuneups I ask every time and there is always no one that knows anything about it. It not the end all but I would like to get it to work. I do love the in sync though. What a great feature

I just fixed that problem with my truck. I had a bunch of media on my memory stick and the other day it quit working. After a little research I found that the memory sticks sometimes lose their bearings and the radio's can't recognize them any more. The fix is to load your memory stick in your computer, locate it and right click on it. A sub-menu will come up. Select "format" and follow the directions. This will erase all media you have on the stick. I would suggest DO NOT back it up and just reload it because one of your folders in the stick may be corrupted. Instead, after you have re- formatted it, reload your media from your music files. This process worked great and I am up and jamming again.

Little more than a year ago Apple started opening the DRM encryption on the files you bought from them. The problem was that people would download music (buy it) and then couldn't transfer it to non-Apple devices because the DRM would prevent it from being played.
You have three options for music that was previously downloaded with DRM enabled.
1) Re-format the data (do a Google search) into a different (.wav) format.
2) Not sync that particular data to your thumb drive.
3) Re-purchase the music.
If I recall, the DRM was enabled from Apple for roughly a year before they reversed it due to new laws. Wish I had better news for you but basically you're locked out of your own files because you're using a device that can't authenticate that you purchased the file.

So if your trying to copy stuff from Itunes from a few years ago you'll have to convert it to another format if you can or re-download hopefully from another source. Been using Amazon Music lately and it is every bit as good if not better than Itunes, so far so good. Haven't encountered any copy / transferable protected music yet.
