I assume flash drive means USB thumb drive? I tried that and Sync couldn't find the music. Do you have all music in one folder on the thumb drive labeled Music and then just drag music into that folder or just drag music straight to the drive?

Yes, a flash drive is what you call a thumb drive. Actually I would say USB flash drive is the more correct term. Honestly, I don't know where or how the term thumb drive came about, but I'm also guilty of using it from time to time. They're pretty much synonyms though. Anyway, on my 64GB flash drive, in the root directory (topmost level), I have folders listed by artist name. Under the artist folder, I have album folders. Under the album folders, I have the appropriate songs listed in order. Most of my files start with the track number to stay in order when sorting by filename. (Example: 00-Song_Name.mp3) This has worked out very well for me with different stereos. It helps to keep your files organized especially if you use your stereo's browse folder feature. Make sure your flash drive is formatted with the FAT32 filesystem before adding music and you should have no problems.

Fat32 is what I may have missed.

Thanks.

They're about the size and shape of a thumb or at least they were originally.

Well I guess that makes sense. My first one (64 MB) was definitely NOT small. And yes, MB is not a typo.

I did not have this problem until I updated to Gen1 4.4. Since then, every week the index is full and it won't play anything on my USB. I have opened a ticket with Ford. It seems that they have seen this problem before, but no solution was apparent and they plan to involve my dealer. Which is funny, because my dealer often asks my opinion on sync issues. Last time I had a sync problem, the dealer started replacing components that had nothing to do with it. It wasn't until I found the solution on the forums, found a TSB and demanded they do that exact procedure.

Spoke to Sync Support Escalation today. They are aware of issues with 4.4 and are working on an update. They expect it soon, but who knows?

Default Sync problem? Index is full?

I have had this problem for a long time..... I stopped using my ipod and switched to 128gb flash drive (fat32). works much better but still the Index is full message shows up. fix is to pull the fuse or disconnect the neg battery cable. It was happening so much that I put a switch on the battery to make reseting easier! For grins I separated my music and audio books onto separate flash drives. To my amazement the drive with just my music on it has not failed to work! I have not put both flash drives into the unit at the same time. I am also much happier now that I have not had to pop the hood and disconnect the battery. SYNC uses all of the meta data stored in the mp3 files to generate a index for voice commands. and that index is a fixed size. I have never seen a response to how big that index is. My guess is that some of my mp3's especially the audio books had a lot of garbage in the meta data. Ford had a program that cleaned the meta data but has stopped supporting it. Hope this helps!
