Not that this will help, but apparently this is a common problem that is not
limited to Apple devices. On the Ford Sync forum, there are folks having the same problem with many devices, including Microsoft's Zune, 4GB USB drives, and Sony. I haven't found an answer on that forum yet, but here's the thread if you want to add to it:
One suggestion was to do a Master Reset which would clear out the index, but that seems a lot like stoping your truck by driving into a tree.
