Swapping out Sony Door Speakers?
I have the Sony 700 Watt system and was wondering if it was worth swapping out the Sony door speakers with a different brand. At this time I would not be adding an amp to the door speakers, just swapping them out. Anyone done this, and is it worth it? Also since I wont be adding an amp, what type of speakers would work best for the doors?
Thanks.
Thanks.

for what it's worth, they are Sony speakers, made by Ford. SO they are probably more like OEM speakers than Sony aftermarket speakers. I used to have Xplodes in an older car and they were ok, I have the same system as you and I think they are crap. I guess they are plastic coned.

If you do swap these out, take some pics of the sony speakers, i am really curious to see the materials used and the magnet proportion.

ianinedm is correct - they're made by Ford, but say Sony. And the cones are plastic.
I have the 700W system, and swapped out all four speakers with Alpines (components front, coaxials rear). You do NOT need an amp, as the existing system has one for the speakers. I've been told - no proof - that the stock amp puts out 45W RMS to each speaker, so more than enough for good sound. (heh, thanks for the link, ianinedm....if I have time later today I'll take a pic of the stocks for you...I've had them listed on craigslist for a few weeks with no bites.)
Yes, replacing the stocks made a world of difference to the stock system. People will tell you that you must get an amp and must replace the stock HU, but that's only if you're interested in showing off instead of having good quality sound, good fidelity, with your existing system via a good set of after-market speakers.

I also have the Sony/Nav and I am planning on putting my JL Audio C3-570 convertable component set in my front doors in the near future. These speakers were expensive, but the sound was outstanding in my 2011 I traded in. I yanked them out and put the stock paper ones back in before trading.
I am wondering if a full range signal is being sent to the door speakers......since the tweeters are up on the pillars??? I plan on using the external crossovers, as this is part of the reason why these speakers sound so good.....

When I did my upgrade I swapped the speakers out first and did the amp install a few weeks later. If I didn't already have the amps sitting in the garage gathering dust I probably would have just gone with the speaker upgrade. Speaker upgrade alone makes a substantial improvement.

Not the best pics.
I replaced it with Rockford Fosgates.
I have the Sony Nav system with subwoofer. I just replaced all 4 door speakers with Rockford Fosgate 1682(? I think that's the model, it's been a while). The sound was much more clear and while I don't listen to music at ear splitting levels, I can turn it up to 100% and still have clear sound where as the stock speakers started to sound horrible at ~60%, maybe even lower.
Speaker size is 6x9. I would recommend getting the Ford speaker adapters so you don't have to splice any wires. 4 speakers and the adapters were under $100 shipped. Installation took about an hour for all 4 speakers, taking my time.
