Subwoofer/Load Flat floor
Looking for some opinions...
I am searching for a 2014 F150 Lariat and my dealer has found two trucks...neither a 100% match of course
My question is about the Sony sub-woofer and its removal. Getting it out shouldn't be a problem and I will be putting in a floor-mat.
Is the sound without the sub-woofer the same as not having it at all or does the Sony HD radio change things?
Has anyone done this, that could help. Thank you for your time.

I actually didn't want the option because I want the flat floor. The sub is kinda in the way. So when the Sony HD Radio is optioned with the accompanying sub...it is then needed for the radio to work correctly?

The radio will still work with out the sub.

I hear you. I've been itching to put a sub in but that's where my dog goes when he's in the truck, plus it's really nice having all that space back there.

One member moved it from the floor to behind the rear seat. Search around for his thread.

I started the upgraded to a kicker sub right before the Christmas holidays, but I didn't complete the install for a couple of weeks due to being out of town. So I listened to the radio without the sub during that time. Other than the lack of bass, it didn't sound too bad.

So does the standard Radio in the Lariat have no bass? Maybe it only matters when you play music loudly?

The way the Sony system is set up, there is a "crossover" - a device that limits the bass to the smaller speakers, and limits the treble to the subwoofer - this keeps the range of sound to any given speaker within a certain parameter, and allows for less distortion since each speaker - being tweeter, midrange, or woofer, playing MOSTLY only frequencies that it is best suited for.
Translated, that means that if you remove the subwoofer, there will be no speakers in THAT system receiving the "deep bass" notes/sounds ... and what you'll get is a more tinny and midrange sound due to the lack of bass. The radio will work fine ... it will just lack the low range.
The systems w/out the subwoofer are not crossed-over to eliminate the bass from the normal speakers and send it all to the subwoofer. That's why you get a full range of sound from those systems too - just not as much "dedicated deep bass" as you do with the sony system.
That said, it's not like the Sony system is some "amazing" system .. it's just slightly better than the standard system.
As far as moving the subwoofer, I get it. I dont find that the small area the subwoofer takes up to be an issue at all - but i understand that it might be an issue for some people. I would not totally remove it if i wanted/needed the extra floor space in the back. I would look into relocating it - or - finding a new subwoofer speaker system that can replace it that's easy enough to mount to the bottom of the seat or behind the rear seat. That way, it's either always out of the way, OR, it's lifted up with the seat when you tilt it up to use all the floor space in the back of the cab.
