Default stolen spare tire

I have owned my 2014 F150 King Ranch only 3 months and find my spare has been ripped off. My service adviser tells me he sees this 3-4 times a month, cable dangling, uncut, no spare. Seems to me, if this is a common problem with F150s, Ford would do something to make it a little more difficult for thieves to lower the spare tire. What is the consensus on this problem?

How can this happen? Don't you have to have a key to unlock the spare tire?

It can happen easily because the "key lock" is just a slug in a piece of butter soft plastic with a tiny tab that anyone with a screw driver can pry out in seconds.

Key lock in the bumper was undamaged. Evidentally there is enough room between the bumper and the tube for the winch mechanism to lower it from under the truck.

Time to invest in a cable lock before someone nabs my spare. Sorry bout your bad luck, let it be a warning to others.

First tailgates now this, have to lock everything up tight these days it seems.

Ford doesn't seem to have any intention of making it harder. Similarly a five year old can punch out the lock cylinders on door and tailgate in about 30 secs and gain access. Common problem for more than 1 generation just like blend door actuator failure.

Never had a problem with my 2005, then again, I had to Jack up the truck to get it out...haven't had my 2013 spare out, but I imagine it is almost on bed to be jacked up

My 2014 King Ranch came with an aftermarket cable lock around the spare. the fact that the dealer had no idea what the mysterious keys inside the glove box were for led me to believe that Ford is aware of this problem.

I just noticed my spare is used, expecting to see a brand new, unused tire with the little pieces of rubber sticking out all over the place. I think someone at the dealer swapped my brand new one out for a used one. Probably sold it on Ebay. There was never a reason for that new one to be remounted. I've never had it in the rotation and never had a flat.

Jeez.
