2012 F-150 steering rack problem #2 - YouTube
Hey thats me!

I'm on my 3rd rack and out of extended warranty, not that they wanted to touch it anymore due to the level.

In the winter here with choppy roads it's terrible. Sounds and feels like the balljoints are going to fall out of the truck.

It's really a pickle...does a guy buy a new rack only to have this happen again, or just deal with it like I have, or trade the thing in? A new rack is still cheaper than new truck paypments, it just sucks driving something that feels worn out when I genuinely love the rest of the truck.

Default Ford has to know about this issue!

I've been following this issue since purchasing a new 2011 EB. Thought I was lucky - mine wasn't doing this....until I hit 20k miles. I can't tell you how many times I read "Ford can't reproduce the problem", or one of their online service techs ask for more data so they can lead the charge to mgmt for resolution. Of course their only job is to keep these types of posters quiet on social media.

Appears Ford just doesn't know how to resolve this (or doesn't want to spend the millions). Many owners have reported replacing the EPAS 3 times, or more. Sometimes at their expense! Quiets the rattle down but it soon comes back. Sounds like every option you can think of has been tried (by owners).

I haven't read through all these (yet) since it's been awhile since I was chasing this problem. I've read that it's still in the 2015 series trucks, are the 2016 - 2017's doing the same? And it's not just EB owners.

Don't know how to resolve this, love the truck otherwise. I have not read where there have been any accidents reported. That would be a game changer for us owners. Thx for letting me vent, promise to take my med's soon.

UPDATE July 2018 had my F150 in for oil change this week, it's the 2011 model with 60K miles. Asked the service mgr to check for any loose connections in the front steering / suspension while it's up on the lift. I've been looking for a fix since it turned 30K miles 3 yrs ago. Recommendation was to replace the "lower intermediate coupler steering shaft" part no 8L3Z-3B676-B. Estimate was $300 for the part plus 1.5 hr labor. 4 hrs later they called and told me they swapped the part but it didn't fix the rattle. They went through everything they could find to tighten but still no luck. They assured me this wasn't a safety issue (yet?) and I had to agree I've never seen an email accusing Ford of safety concerns. So, if you're still looking for a cure take this one off your list of possible fixes.

UPDATE from late 2015: New 2014 02/2015, at 6500 miles got lucky and dealer replaced my rack for popping and dead spot. 31000 miles now and she's still good. Good luck to those still fighting the fight, and I'll admit, may see you out there again at any time.

I know this is old but I've been having issues with my 2014 (6.2L with hydraulic rack), same symptoms. Dealer replaced my rack and pump last spring and everything was great for about 6 months (12,000 miles) and now it's back to the same problem. I'm trying to work with them on how to resolve it permanently but this and my constant coolant leaks are the two issues that counter all my love for this truck.

Do you have a levelling kit?

Currently, yes I do, a bilstein suspension level. The issues started before that though.

My 15 5.0 does it. Ive noticed it is more prone to doing it in warmer weather and when I am going through a parking lot. Every time I pull into my apartment complex parking lot and the truck is kind of rocking side to side while I am turning right it pops like crazy. Im taking it to the dealership tomorrow to get that fixed, the four-wheel drive system fixed, and my transmission fixed. I had just got a new water pump and y connector last week. :/ Its getting close to 45k miles.

well i scanned this thread. my truck recently developed the front end rattle also (at 53000 miles). thing is, mine is lowered with djm arms and shortened stock springs. i replaced the sturts, upper control arms with ball joints, and strut mounts. this eliminated some of the noise, however there was still a popping sound that i couldn't chase down. i also read where someone tightened his stabilizer end links and it made no difference.

i decided to tightened the end links up anyway, and the upper nuts on each side were loose. tightened them up, now the front end is as quiet as a church mouse.

lucky me!!

Not true with my situation- I removed my level kit to satisfy Fords requirement. Took it back to the dealer and it still rattled the same as with the level kit on. Ford then paid for the uninstall and reinstall of the level kit, replaced the steering rack, and now at 70k I am still having the feeling/ noise. I think the new rack helped a bit but didn't completely eliminate it.
