in the late 80s to early 90s i had a a Jayco J slidein popup camper. the truck would carry it as a far as weight wise but squirrely out on the highway. then i added my Skeeter bass boat and pretty scary. this is what i did, went to junk yard and found a Bronco set of leaf springs. they had 5 leafs without an overload bottom spring. took the bottom 2 springs that were progessively smaller and added to my leaf pack. 5 leaf pack plus the overload thick bottom factory spring. then i ordered a set of load leveler shock, gas with spring around the outside shocks. my truck already had a towing pkg that included a rear sway bar. truck handled great after doing this and not to rough driving empty. the biggest problem is the high center of gravity and if you add weight to the hitch you can get in a bind pretty quick. if you tow, you will have to have a custom draw bar made. my Jayco weighed around 1200 lbs empty, then add roof air, 20 gallons of water, propane and all your camping gear it adds up. i would have a custom made tail gate similar to a 5th tailgate and 3/4" 4x8 plywood to help distribute the weight off the tailgate somewhat. i did not want to rely on air bags or shocks in case one or both blew out. i know prices are higher but the leafs were $20 at junkyard and shocks were less than $100, couple bucks for center spring bolts at NAPA.

You dont want a low overhang if hooking a trailer on. Make sure it wont affect turning radius.

well the best reason is so you can bring a boat with you...... you cant tow a travel trailer and a boat at the same time....you can with a in bed camper.....

Came across this from a different search... but recently got to see the setups now offered by FourWheel campers at Main Line Overland in West Chester PA...

Simply amazing, and light. Saw one installed on an F150... stock up front. airbags in the back. they are super light and amazing inside!

i'd like to know as well. i'm guessing that even with the max payload package he must have bumped up real close to his GVWR with that model.

this is my gpa's set up. grated its on 05 and s.cab, but it would fit in my s.crew with tailgate installed but down vs his truck it'd fit with no tailgate ( tail gate taken off). firestone air bags aired to 50 psi and pulled his 16' bass boat behind

**this is the hawk model

With the huge increase of the short bed customer base, most camper manufactures are aggressively coming after us. Just check out Truckcampermagazine.com, they have a complete list of what is now out there for the fastest growing pickup market!
