Default Shudder what if's....

Ok tonight I was thinking about the shudder issue a lot of us are experiencing. The shudder/vibration at speed etc. and came across someone suggesting that it could be a misfire happening at a certain speed and throttle response.

The sort of feathering of the gas pedal to maintain speed....which is exactly how I have mine in my truck.

He talked about possibility of corrosion on the coils (they were discussing older trucks that had over 100,000 miles) which also made me think about the possibility of moisture accumulating and causing a slight misfire.

Searching around I found this website that talked about the COP's:

http://voices.yahoo.com/ford-f-150-c...t-7970264.html

I know a lot of us are convinced that it is something to do with the driveline at speed or eeven a harmonic resonance (the service manager at my dealer believes this)...but what if it is really a misfire that is not throwing a code? I personally have both the shudder at low speed (or when coming to a stop sign) AND the higher speed shudder. Sometimes I feel it plain as day and other times I don't...it is odd.

Could this really be a misfire issue?? Your thoughts?

Hey princevalium,

One of the obvious things to check is your spark plug gaps. It seems that some people have had plug gaping that was incorrect straight out of the factory which seems a bit odd. You would think if this was critical as many claim that Ford would have some tighter controls at the source for this. (At the assembly plant) What length is your bed? I hear it's more prominent in the 6 1/2" bed if it's the same vibration I'm thinking of.

None the less give your spark plugs a quick check and hopefully it's an easy fix for you and I understand it's a little discouraging I think you picked your truck up last month?

Yes last month...and I have the 5 1/2' bed. I did read about the spark plug gaps not being correct. I will have them check them while it is in the shop tomorrow. Thanks.

Sigh. New people.

Yes, it is a misfire. Condensation from the intercooler causes a misfire. Feathering the throttle allows the engine to draw the condensation in slowly enough to avoid kicking into a limp home mode. Eventually enough misfires clog the cats, resulting in a drop in power.

The first thing that you'll notice is that the check engine light will come on while idling as the ECU notices a flow through cat problem.

Not nary "sigh, new people" mess. Old Prince has been around on other F150 forums too. I think the old boy has researched this shuddering stuff a bit already, even though he just got his new Ecoboost.

Prince, did you see that video that old posted over there? He connected it under his truck and posted about 4 videos from under his truck while driving! It shows the shuddering real good.

I fixed mine. I really did. Look up my thread. Axle Shudder solution. Cheap and easy fix. Off the shelf parts.

I've read on some of the posts that the dealership won't check the plug gap if there is no codes. You might assume they got checked when the service writer tells you they were checked and all was good. Verify they actually got regapped.

Eric.....First off let me start by letting you know I have read MANY posts on shuddering and misfires. As iFord has stated I might have bought my truck recently but have been on forums for quite awhile. I have frequented another forum for years before buying my truck...and decided to give this forum a try not too long ago.

Now...my issue is not a CAC issue...it feels just like going over rumble strips when coming to a stop and I also feel some vibration at speed around 55 mpg. I also get the shudder when lightly accelerating in 4th gear through town. I do not feel any misfiring during idle or any type of stumbling during idle.

Where I do appreciate your response...starting your response with sigh ..new people is really not needed.

13Harleyfan...That is possible that they will not check them. I will ask the service manager if he will have them checked. I was just wondering of the possibilities of this actually being the motor stumbling at speed and causing what feels like a vibration.

iFord...thanks for your reply and defense...lol Yes I did see the video and I did see the actual wobbling of the driveshaft. Mine is a one piece...but it sure made me think about getting my own GoPro camera and mounting it to see if it does the same thing or not.

PRNDL...I will look up what you did...thanks for the reply.

I had your same issue. The rumble strip at very low speeds and all. Fixed!

So all of it was fixed by adding the extra leaf?
