I say if you can afford it, go for it. Can't say anything about the reliablilty part of it as I just got mine but I love the truck. Picked up a 14 S/Crew XLT 4X4 with the 5.0. Sticker on it was $49k, got it for $36k (Employee Pricing deal) $32k seems a tad high for an STX but maybe thats just me.

Keep shopping and dont be afraid to drive out of state to save a few thousand. I picked up a Loaded XLT 4x4 supercab, 302A, leather, ecoboost and HIDs. The sticker price was 46,000 and I paid 34,200 with the dealer installing remote start and a bedliner. So you can do much better if you look around.

Geography makes a huge difference, I didn't realize where you were.
For several thousand dollars you can have a nice trip out of state to pick one up though ....

Fly to Texas and grab one, I'm in LA but TX has deals galore. As far as brand drive a few of both and see what ya like. Mines treated me well but I prob would not buy another after this one.

Ford F150s are very reliable vehicles. The new Tundras are not bad either. But don't be concerned about transmission reliability on the F150. That transmission has been proven solid.

And don't hesitate to buy out of state. Check cars.com. If you can save a few grand, or get a better optioned truck for the same money, it might be worth considering. You intend to keep it a long time, so get the nicest one your budget allows. A one time trip of a 1000 miles might be worth it.

I did some lurking on the Toyota Tundra forums and they are having some issues with steering racks and water pumps.

Plus, sounds like the base V8 is a bit of a turd compared to the 5.7 V8.

Some guys are noting that the Tundra is not as tight and well-made as their previous Toyotas.

I'd love to get a Tacoma, but it's just not enough truck if I decide to get more into horses and have to tow a horse trailer.

The Silverado has been having some major issues as well... And Dodge, well, I bought a new Dodge Ram in 2001 and had to take it back 6 months later due to all of the problems... Never again...

It seems the F150 is the best overall for price, reliability, and power...

If you can get a tundra for same price with the 5.7, it may be worth considering. For me it wasn't because my truck tows and hauls my toys and it need to set 1k lbs on tailgate regularly and Need the bigger bed.

OP. Since you are in WA just head over to Seattle for deals. Try evergreen ford in issaquah for a start. Email Andrew, the internet sales manager. He is one of the few that understands how internet sales should work. Their deals were the best I found and made it worth my while to travel from NV

Drive that Toyota before you buy, my brother HATES all the performance robbing nanny modes on his. My Dodge 5.7 was quicker than my 5.0 Ford off the line, hair trigger on the Dodge you touch the gas it goes bam. I think the Ford is quicker rolling, punch it from 40mph or 55mph and it gets up and goes, the Dodge seemed gasping for air in those situations. My 5.0 Ford gets WAY better gas mileage than my Dodge did, love that, I'm getting a combined 15.1 mpg and most of my driving is around town not freeway. I got as low as 8mpg in the Dodge and 11mpg mixed typically. Mind you I paid $10k more for my Ford than my Dodge but my Ford is better than my Dodge in virtually every way, the Ford is a really nice vehicle.

Tip: Keep an eye on Courtesy Ford ads in Portland, OR they have been known to take some of the advertising money Ford kicks back to them to lower the price on a few trucks to lure people into the showroom. I purchased my 2004 F150 from them via one of these ads, a Lariat priced like $8k under sticker. It was thousands less than I could buy the truck for with my Ford Partner pricing through work. Being willing to drive/fly out of your area could save you many thousands of dollars. When I purchased my Dodge in 2010 I drove like 300 miles to get it for that very reason, discounts being offered in my local area were half what that dealer was offering.
