Scared to buy an Ecoboost?
#21
I've had an 11 for 3 years and it's awesome. We bought a Taurus sho with the same motor we were so happy with it. Both are power houses and NO issues. From what I've read here WXman has a hard on for bashing eco's so I'd take his advice with a grain of salt.

My 2012 EB is rolling 113k miles today. I have a ton of friends who are in sales who are way over me in mileage without any significant issues. My plan is to trade at 225k...

I have a 13 ECB and with 47K miles and counting and no issues!! I did have some concerns about the oil pressure reading 3/4 to high side but after reading numerous threads and watching owners/dealers videos, I noticed their vehicle oil pressure was/is reading the same. With that being said, I am safely assuming the oil psi indication is normal.

This is my 5th Ecoboost. Had two Flex Ecoboost, and MKT Ecoboost, and a 12 F150 Ecoboost. The only one that gave me some problems was the 2012, and I do believe it was all due to the programming. My 2014 has 29K on it in about 10 months of owning it, and other than one instance of falling on its face, weather conditions were perfect for sucking up moisture for 2 days, it has been trouble free.
The one thing to note, I have 3:15 gearing, and with a tune on it @60 MPH it will not downshift up a grade, so the engine lugs and feels like its misfiring, but now with smaller tires on, the RPM's are at or above 1500, so that lugging is gone. It will return when I put the stock wheels back on though, so if anything I would say stay away from high geared ones, minimum of 3:55 on it, anything higher and it wont work well with a tune. I am considering replaced the R&P with 3:31 or 3:55 ratio to overcome this. Note, this is only when running a tune, with the stock programming, it will unlock 6th when going up a grade to avoid lugging, but it suffers from too many downshifts with the stock tune when passing.
The Ecoboost is a beast, it can out pull the V8, and gets better MPG than the 5.0, regardless of what the basher said. If you get poor MPG with one, you have your foot in it enjoying it too much!

I have 103k on my very early build 2011 and all I've done to it is change the oil and spark plugs. A friend traded his 2012 in with 230k on it. All mass produced products will have a few problems. However, the EB is on the lower end of the spectrum.

I did, however, test an EcoBoost truck thoroughly before buying my Coyote and it confirmed my decision just based upon driving dynamics alone. Even if Ford eventually perfects the design of the little turbo engines, the fuel economy will always suck with them because you can't over-ride the laws of physics. A small engine is going to have to work hard, turbos or not.

I bought a 13 in November. 5000 miles trouble free. I'm going to put new plugs in it when the weather warms but that's something I've done on every vehicle I've ever owned. Mine's getting 16mpg mixed which is pretty damn good considering the unrealistic EPA test rates it at 17. No truck is going to get anywhere near what is on the window sticker if you're doing 80mph and put it on a lift with 35s. It's either eco, or boost. I like the economy but it's a nice kick in the pants when those turbos spool. The low end torque is fantastic.
A family friend has a fleet of 4 '11-13 F-150s for his business. Two have coyotes, two have Ecoboosts. All have over 100,000 miles and all have been problem free. They're both fine engines.

Last spring, I noticed a rattle in the front end, going over bumps or even ripples in the road. The rattle could be felt up into the steering wheel, while driving. Turned out there was play in the electronic steering rack that could only be fixed by replacing the whole rack. It was just out of warranty at the time, and my thread on this forum allowed me to voice my displeasure of a $1000 repair bill, with many other members that had the same issue. There is lots of folks with rack issues on the new electronic ones, but not enough for Ford to issue a recall. In my thread, Ford Service chimed in and got me in contact with the Canadian crew. That lead to a regional Rep calling me. Not being a recall, he empathized with my issue, the expense involved and realized i had been a ford customer for years. They gave me a $400 voucher that could be used at my local dealer, for whatever I wanted. It didn't cover my repair bill but helped a lot, for future oil changes and general maintenance. This had nothing to do with the truck being an EcoBoost, just a fact of manufacturing issues on the electric racks found in all the newer gen F150's. Heck, my 2010 that I traded after replacing the old style steering rack has since had two more rack replacements (I know the guy who purchased it from the dealer) in just a year!! Love my Eco, and forgot to mention in my earlier post that I've just hit over 120,000 kms, and no engine issues.

I had to put my stock tune back in since it will be going in for service, and body work, and man what a difference. If you guys think the EB has ***** stock, a tune makes it a raped ape! I never want to go back to a NA V8.
