In stead of an iPad...
I've been thinking about just doing a hard drive swap, for a much (much) larger one, on the internal. Has anyone tried or ever heard of anyone trying this?

this would be an interesting mod. you can add a usb hard drive to it by simply plugging it into one of the usb ports - I'm guessing yours are in the console like mine (?)

Yes, but I have so much music that indexing on such a large drive is a pain and no one makes a tablet big enough. . I'm hoping that an internal drive swap will fix all of that. I've found someone that will replicate the drive and put all of my music on it. All I have to do is pull it out of the head unit and put it back in myself. That should be fairly easy.

I have an Acer Iconia tablet and it's internal is 32gb ,plus has a 32gb micro sd card and a built in usb slot that will accept up to a 250gb hd. ( power wise it won't work with anything larger unless it runs on separate power and even then only up to 450gb) How much bigger do you need?
I put all the music I listen to in the truck on a 64gb usb and it's plugged into the usb2 in the glove box. If I want different music I have 64gb on the phone.
I'd be set if the tablet and sync would play nice via Bluetooth, but they don't like each other.

I currently have nearly 350gb. I was originally thinking about a Surface or Surface Pro that will support my 2tb hd, but I can save $500-1000 just on the computer plus the cost to mount it in the truck.

Not sure, but is the OS on that HD or is it just a storage device? Even if it's not, there is a chance it won't know how to handle a huge HD. It may require a specific Instal to work? Unless you already have the HD you want to put in, I would suggest before spending a bunch of money, using one you have already to see if it will work. I doubt it's just a plug and play swap.
Sounds like a fun challenge. Good luck and let us know.
