Rough idle/chatter/shake 5.4L

Ouch! 7MPGs is pretty ridiculous! I'm averaging between 13-14 this winter. I do a good mix of freeway and traffic light driving. Over last summer I don't think I ever reached a 16MPG average, which I thought was strange considering the summer before I was bordering on 18MPG. I had explained it away in my head figuring I just wasn't being as careful with my driving, but I was still trying really hard to conserve my fuel.
I hear ya. I wasn't all too pleased when I started reading about all the 5.4L cam phasers issue. Before I bought the truck all I heard/read was how solid the 5.4L was. I guess it's all in what you are looking for. I love the truck and I've always been a Ford truck guy, but this engine problem has slightly sour my view of things. Let's hope we both get new engines

According to the tech my engine has the upgraded cam phasers. It looks like a faulty timing chain tensioner seal that blew out that has caused the damage. Even though they were noisy and the engine at times sounded like diesel it doesn't look like the cam phasers are the culprit in my case.

I'm torn between thinking I should unload this truck after they fix or replace the motor and trade on a 2013 5.0, or drive it for a couple years and then trade. I've been looking at 5.0 threads on a few F150 forums and starting to see guys complaining about knocking issues with the new engine now. And Ford seems to be pushing back on warranty complaints too. I've owned nothing but Fords my entire adult life and never considered driving a C@$% <four letter word. But very disheartened with Ford right now.
Don't be too disappointed, at least it's gettig fixed

The dealer says it will be covered by the warranty, but they haven't heard back from Ford yet. So its still up in the air. I can't imagine what the warranty cost has been to Ford over the last few years with these trucks. I wouldn't be surprised if they push back.

Same thoughts have crossed my mind, other than I hadn't heard of the issues with the 5.0. Glad to hear it now rather than later. I've actually been considering the Ecoboost because of the type of driving I tend to do. Depending on how things go down (how mad I get at Ford) its also possible that I might trade it in and get myself a little commuter car for the time being. Run it into the ground and save some dough. Nothing I do now requires me to have a pickup, I just like driving a truck. It would be a painful transition, but maybe a smart one if things don't pan out like they should.

New Shortblock in the mail
Got some good news from the dealership today. They are going to replace my motor. The service manager told me it normally doesn't take a week to get a diagnosis, and that my truck was very 'strange'. The fact that it would run fine one moment and then run like crap the next moment made it harder to diagnose. Prior to the call I just received I've been communicating with the service manager via email, because it's much easier. The last thing I had heard was that the dealer had submitted its findings and now "Ford is having the technician perform a service bulliten to inspect the cam shaft solenoids for debris, and check tolerances". Ford obviously doesn't want to pay for something that isn't there fault so they were very meticulous in testing. Anyway, they got authorization for a 'shortblock' replacement. The engine is shipping from Memphis; they should have it by Tuesday or Wednesday. So I'm at very least a week out. Now that I know the final verdict I can be plenty patient. Once I get the truck back with all the paperwork I'll hopefully have more useful information to post here. Have you guys gotten any news? Hopefully good news?

My engine is starting to get noisy when cold and I have noticed a bitof a rough idle from time to time. Hopefully this isnt the start of something worse.
