Thumbs up Review: Hypertech 42501 for Ecoboost (2013)

Morning all. This is my first post even though I have been lingering for something prior to joining.

Lot's of good info on hear and I'm hoping to be a good contributor.

So, my story is that I now have a 2013 F-150 Lariat Ecoboost.

Added 22" Limited Wheels and Tires as well as badging. I wanted to start doing more mods and was interested in tuners.

While researching the site, I found lots of higher dollars tuners that were recommended. There wasn't a lot of information to be had on the Hypertech.

I was lucky enough to find one while searching on ebay. Used from someone in New Hampshire that apparently works at a Ford dealership. (The box was shipped to me from Ford)

Total price shipped: $135 How could I say no to that, right?!?!?!

So, I did more research regarding the proper settings and issues people had and was unable to find anything solid.

I first updated the tuner with the latest and greatest. Then I called Hypertech and spoke to them about their recommended settings.

They informed me the The only available settings for my truck are:

Regular Fuel Tune
Premium (91) Fuel Tune
Thermostat Temp
Top Speed Setting
Tire Height Adjustment
Rear Gearing Adjustment

They no longer allow manual adjustments to:
Shift Firmness
Rev Limiter
Shift Points

The latter apparently because of issues they had in the past with shudder and different things.

My thoughts so far???????

The programming:

Very easy but would suggest that you remove the radio fuse as the programming messes with the computer and even though you turn the radio off, it comes back on tuned to AM which is just loud static. Did this 3 or 4 times as well as performed a few "Automatic Updates to Sync".

The 1st tech I spoke to said there was no need to pull the fuse.

The 1st time through I pulled a code (B10F1) and then cleared it. No Problem.

Then I begin the tuning process and follow the prompts. This part wasn't as smooth right away. I rec'd a prompt of Code 6F: Unable to get Vehicle VIN. Please call Tech Supt at 800-blah blah blah.

So I immediately call and low and behold Gary answers. (He is on here from time to time) Gary asks a few things and tells me that the key isn't in the on position. Funny thing is that I have never moved it and it's in the same spot.

Out of the blue the programmer starts the process over on its own and I'm able to begin. Gary says the key was definitely not in the on position. Seemed odd to me as I never touched the whole time. Oh well...... moving on............

Once it started working, things were very easy. It asks questions and you answer them.

I choose the regular fuel tune (at least for now) and walked through the process. At the end it tells me it is writing to the computer.

Suddenly I get an Advance Trac error on the dash and I continue to follow the prompts for turn key off, then on, then off, then on.......................

This must have gone on for a solid 15 minutes. After the device managed to write to the compute approximately 3 more times, I was done.

Disconnected, Shut key off, Started truck. No errors. Took the truck for a drive.

1st:
Definitely an improvement!!!!! Very noticeable seat of the pants.

2nd:
They have absolutely adjusted shift points as it is very clear to me that it isn't shifting the same. I am going to call the adjustments a positive improvement. Only problem is that the tires now spin very very easy on a WOT rolling start.

3rd:
Some people were mentioning a delay or hesitation from throttle input to response on the down shift. I too noticed this, but my impression is that it's only more pronounced than before because once it starts going, IT STARTS GOING!!

I'm not going to say that I'm now going to be lining up at the lights with Mustang GTs, but the difference, improvement is very noticeable.

I'm going to run it with this tune for a while and see how it goes. After that, I'll run the Premium Fuel Tune and give my thoughts on it.

For me, I'm quite happy with the tuner at the moment. For what I spent and the 20 or minutes to walk through the process, we worth every penny.

Plus if the Premium Tune is even better...... Watch out Mustangs...

Worse case would be that I get some more funds and sell this tuner to one you fine folks and get a custom tune.

Hope that this was a decent 1st posting. As soon as i have time, I'll get some pictures up of the truck.

Oh yeah....... LOVE the truck so far!!!!
