Im looking for a little help. I love my 5.0L but the exhaust was to quite. So I had the muffler removed and a straight pipe welded in. I LOVE the way it sounds. But the dealer told me when I had it in the other day that I would end up burning a hole in a piston if I didnt get a muffler reinstalled. I left the resinator and cats in place. Is this something I need to worry about? I heard the muffler was pretty much straight anyway, it just muffled the sound to much for my liking.

Lol. That's hilarious. No, it's not going to burn a hole in the piston. You could remove the resonator and run straight off the cats and not do any damage. Hell, pull the cats even. Worst that will happen is you'll end up flowing too freely and you'll lose low end torque. I've got several friends that have ran a ton of miles with no exhaust, no melted pistons (Ford 5.4, Chevy 5.3).

You'll be fine. You'll just have to grease the muffler bearing once or twice a year but that's not too hard.

Muffler bearing grease ?????? Do I need a special tool ? Im going to stop after work tomorrow and pick up blinker fluid. Ill ask about this grease too. Shoul the guys at Autozone be able to find it? lol

Yes, please don't be "that guy". People enjoy the tranquility of their homes and the last thing they want to hear is some droning, cackling, no muffler truck.

The resonator actually quiets it down a LOT. I'd bet money he doesn't drone at all. My 12" glasspack doesn't drone or even pop because I left the resonator in place. The muffler shop I used said they often use the resonators as mufflers for Rangers and such.

There's a bunch of these inconsiderate *******s in my area. Ranging from the aforementioned trucks to 6 cylinder cars/trucks with a system that makes it sound horrible to 4 bangers with fartcan systems.

My wife has complained since day one about the commercial trucks at the end of the block, we live in a corner lot and the road next to us is a dead end and has numerous heavy equipment businesses. I never noticed cus I worked days. She noticed when she moved in cus she worked nights and was here in the daytime.

I'll be honest, I had a mbrp dump kit on my 4.0L, it sounded great at idle. However there was a drone at 2k+ rpms. I'm glad I don't have that anymore and should have swapped back to stock sooner. She could hear me a block away with that system. When I left in the morning, I was light on the throttle until I was far enough away on the main roads.

I've thought about getting the resonator delete for my f150 but at the same time I love how quiet my truck is. I can carry a convo without any drone. I'm only 37, I love the sound of a great exhaust system but the majority of people piece kits together and they sound horrible.

As for burning a hole in a piston? I don't think I've heard of that. I have heard that an unrestricive system can float valves. However I'm pretty sure that's a headers and no restrictions like bends, a resonator or a muffler style exhaust.

Actually, its excessive back pressure that can float valves, such as a tight exhaust brake on a diesel. When the 1st gen. Dodge Cummins came out, BD had an exhaust brake kit that could be run at various levels. If you wanted to go higher than 24 psi you had to swap in the heavier optional exhaust valve springs.
