Default Removing Man-Step Handle and Covering the Holes?

Hey all,

New owner of an 11 FX4 SCrew with the tailgate step. The problem is that I use this truck for my contracting business, and I'm worried about the tailgate getting beat up. I know the plastic cover won't hold up to the abuse, and there is a wider gap around the edge where there is exposed paint, than there would be if the tailgate were Line-X'd.
My question is can you remove the handle and cover, and replace them with the inner panel from a non step tailgate? I am having my bedliner sprayed tomorrow, so if this is not possible, I will have them remove the cover and handle, and at least have them spray beneath it.

Thanks!

Jesse

BTW I did a search. Being new here doesn't mean I'm new

Could also see if someone wants to trade tailgates. I have a tuxedo black stx and would love the tailgate step.

I love the step too. Just not the handle.

Yea I've heard you can just get an access panel for a regular tailgate and it will get rid of the plastic.

I'll give my dealer a call today, and see what they know.

You can get the panel and screws for the 11's (they're different from 09-10) for about $100 from the dealer. I just replaced my old man pole with the panel when I had my liner shot in. Much much better....

Hmm, Maybe I'll cancel today and get the panel first...

you will want the panel linex'd separately so you can have access inside the tailgate for step or back up camera repair

I had my liner shot by a local company, not Line-X or Rhino. Differences aside, the owner of the company, Pro-Cote for those of you in Southern Colorado, ordered all the peices from Ford, and picked them up when they were in. In the meantime, he shot my entire bed on Monday, and I dropped my tailgate off with him Friday so he could prep it and shoot the liner on that. Maybe you can make similar arrangements?

Removing the handle is cake, but you'll need Torx drivers.
