I bought the lights, comes with the bulb built in. Fits right in the bottom of the mirror after you pop the black plug out of the housing. I ran 1 wire through the housing and ran another for ground. I used the turn signal ground inside the mirror. It turned out I had the power feed for the puddle lamps in the connector at the mirror. Its a solid purple wire. I ran the new puddle lamp wire around the connector and spliced into the factory harness a few inches from the mirror connector. If you dont have the factory puddle lamp feed you can tap into the dome lap circuit. I dont know what year/trim level/cab config your truck is or I'd give a little more detail.

Do you have a part # for the puddle lamp?

cjcnomor4, thanks for the details, I have a 2011 ecoscab lariat and not sure if the puddle lamp wire is built in, I'll take a look and if not I guess I'm going to the dome light.

I used a 270 ohm. 1/4 W. 1000 ohm was too much- the running light became too dim to see in the daylight.

You should have the purple wire in the truck wiring harness connector at the mirror site. The mirror connector should have a blank pin hole at that same location on the mirror plug. You should be able to get Ford (or Radio Shack) to order the pins so you can just insert the pin in the plug on the mirror and wire your mirror like the factory would have done it. The pins are spring loaded to lock in place, so just solder your wire to the pin, find the right hole and push it in place. As for the ground, same situation, but it's probably wired into the multiple ground pin on that same connector so just soldeing it to a known good ground would have the same effect (no need to risk melting something inside the back of the connector with a soldering iron). Once you get puddle lamp power inside the mirror, it's a matter of using pretty much any connector to hook up the puddle lamp.

I did this the other day. I was able to reach in and unplug the connection to the original blinkers in the mirror, then I had plenty of room to work. I didn't feel confident enough to give the wires a good jerk and risk breaking them. Had I not pulled the connection, I would not had enough room to do it from the puddle light. This took a total of 20 minutes. $15 from AutoZone.
